You sure about that? That sounds a little out of the ordinary from your normal strike/lockout situation. |

An actual date? No. I think as days go by, each side starts looking at things in terms of "okay, I think I'm losing more by continuing with this than I am gaining by getting my way". And that's why you hear the ideas floated about replacement players... If that were to come to be, the league loses much less, doesn't need the players, and gives them more leverage. - prock
still... i'd be curious to know if NBC has an out clause in that tv contract. the threat of losing that deal would put alot of pressure on the owners to get something worked out. |

Can people stop saying these players are greedy (as both side are, hence this lock-out) because they make millions a year and they should be happy, or you would be happy playing for $60K a year....Im sure the owners would love to sign you for that but you suck and thats why you dont play in the NHL....Yes the players are rich but they are the best talent in the world and the hardest working of all sports (IMO) and if it wasnt for them we would have nothing to talk about around the water cooler....im not saying they are innocent but come on, get real, they risk their ass everytime they play and are the worlds elite players for a reason and its hark work to get there - Isles4fornow
Yeah I definitly SUCK when compared to pro, who doesn't. I was referrinf to the fact that average people make 60 and a lot less to do a sh!t job and we still do everyday until we die. They get to do what they love for millions/fame and a lifetime of financial security while they risk injuries (which by the way isn't as risky as before, they turned hockey so soft that people like Kessel don't get injured). In other words, the owners risk everything financially and players have only to worry about staying healthy, which with all these new rules and ever evolving protective gears, is becoming an easier job every year.
Bottom line, I hate both sides for thier greed but I hate the players more for not playing ball and sharing the pie at least 50-50. My 50 cents |

I'd say the threat of losing the deal is there, long-term, whether there is an out clause or not.
Wasn't the NHL relegated to OLN network for the most part, a few years back? They don't likely want to revisit that situation.
I'd say that's a pressure point for both sides though. |

i'm curious to know what percentage of NHL players have signed contracts with other leagues?
its one thing to say "the players can just go play elsewhere" but its quite a different story if only 15% of union players are getting contracts - Dozzer
As of today there are 92 NHL players who signed contracts to play in a different league (don't know the %). 29 out of 30 teams are represented. |

thats what i mean.. the NBC adds a new element doesnt it?
it adds more pressure to the ownership group if that deal is at risk.
then again, with HRR I guess it would add to the players risk as well would it not? |

I heard Glen Healy on the radio talking about this; he essentially said that the % of guys who went over to Europe is so low, you shouldn't really consider it to be a factor.
He also said something very interesting: 40% of the league is making minimum. So while everyone wants to look at what Crosby and Parise are thinking, the cracks are going to come from the guys who really need the money.
And those guys making minimum aren't playing in Europe.
He also pointed out that guys who are the 23rd man on the roster are particularly vulnerable: if the AHL gets going, and NHL teams have nothing to do but watch their minor teams, if a kid impresses, they will bring him up once the NHL gets going. That guy who was the 23rd man on the roster will be out of a job.
One final thought: in the last lockout, Healy was such a pro-NHLPA guy it was embarrassing - he provided no balanced perspective whatsoever.
He isn't like that now. But I guess he still has a sour taste in his mouth from the 2 years he worked for the NHLPA. |

Get this: the NHL still gets 100% of the money from NBC this year for the entire TV contract, even if no games are played.
NBC is owned by Comcast.
Comcast is owned by Ed Snider.
The Flyers are owned by Ed Snider. |

30 teams with 23 roster players each
thats 690 players
92/690 = 13.333%
that leaves 86.667% of players without salary income.

I understand what you meant. And I'm saying I don't know if there is an out clause. But long term, there is always an "out clause", which has just as much of a detriment as an actual out clause in the current contract (which lasts how long)?
And yeah - I edited my previous post. That's a pressure point for both sides. Neither side wants revenue to decrease. They both want it to increase. They just both want as big a share of that as they can get. |

I'm not sure what they're counting as "an NHL player", but there were over 1000 players on NHL rosters last year. |

and thats the weak link in the union stance, the fringe guys...
the NHL doesnt really NEED the fringe guys.. they need the stars... knowing this I expect them to wait til those fringe players start to get nervous... it should create a chink in the unions stance.. wouldnt be surprised at all if the NHL just sits out and waits for that to happen.
be curious to know what percentage of players lost their NHL jobs in the last lockout.. the league should be subtly exploiting that.

Another great NHL myth.
There has never been a greater pool of talent, coming from as many countries around the world.
The rise of hockey in the USA alone has ensured that there is enough talent.
Training has never been better.
Coaching has never been better. - Atomic Wedgie
Maybe not watered down but defiantly not rich in the talent pool. I agree with the fact that Europeans have changed the game and made it better than it ever was thanks to pioneers of the sport and US hockey has consistently improved and made the Canada US rivalry so much better. Training in every league is better. Can you argue that this league wouldn't be better if it had 3 or 4 teams less that consistently lose money every year and don't draw a fan base? Watered down is a bad way to put it but a teams that lose money don't make for a better league when they have to be supported by others and give a lot of players jobs who arguably shouldn't be in the NHL. This lockout is not just about money and has to be a turning point in the NHL. This league has to evolve for a better future for fans, players and owners alike. |
