Sounds pretty racist to me. - flamminghead
The KHL is worse... They'll only accept one non-Russian per team. |

why are the players greedy?
pretty simple problem the NHL has. Cap floor kept rising too quickly for 1/3 of the league... means, the CAP did not mitigate player salaries and financial growth as what was expected, in theory, back in 2005.

Those 5 viewers represent 33.333% of the American audience. - laughs2907
And just think, if you could grow the U.S. TV audience to like 30 viewers, that would translate to a $400 million a year contract. Up in Canada, 30 viewers gets you about $7.50, even less when the exchange rate moves back below par. |

There will be a half season. The players will take the best deal they can get come December, same as 1994 and start games in January, probably with the winter classic where the Wings will ass frank the Leafs to an 8-1 win.
I absolutely hate the NHL players and owners right now.

Yes, to make up for the lost revenue! With ideas like this you should be working for the NHL.

The reason the players want to stay above 50% is they are the only league other than the NFL with a hard salary cap. To give numbers to that the NHL cap ceiling was $64.3 million while the NFL ceiling is $120.6 million. Quite a difference. The NHL of all the sports has the lowest average salary. So them wanting a larger piece of the pie is understandable.
Also the players put forth a proposal that would lower their share to 54%. The owners on the other hand want them to lower all the way down to 47%. No one in their right mind would accept a 10% reduction and the fact that the owners have yet to propose the 50/50 split shows they don't care. Any reduction in pay is obviously a loss to the players and pretty much every proposal has the owners winning again, but they seem like instead of taking the victory they are trying to get another crushing victory over the NHLPA.
There is also the fact that the NHLPA was ok with playing under the current CBA this season while a new one was negotiated. Again the owners said no way. The owners seem unwilling to give in on anything.
What is ridiculous is how little the two sides have met since the finals. After the draft they should have been meeting multiple times a week to try and get this done. - HarvP
How come the NHLPA hasn't proposed a 50/50 split either? Shows they don't care.
Many Lacrosse players have to hold down a full time job in addition to playing pro. Just saying. |

because they will be giving back 7% in one shot, & I guess will be a rollback.
I think I'm changing my stance somewhat, I was on the players for acting entitled to the on going 57%, if the NFL is closer to 50/50, that they are acting spoiled.
But they do have a point, they can negotiate for another year under the same system, and avoid fuc&ing the fans with this lockout, the players aren't the ones fuc&ing us with no season this time, the owners & Gary Bettman are.
Bettman's job is to serve the owners, but he also has a responsibility to the fans, and what he's doing is the easiest way for him to get his way, regardless of what it does to the fans. I don't feel the owners should be insulated from the fans either, (under Gary's rule), the owners should have to face as many fans that wish to ask questions & pursue answers.

Uh no.
If they "negotiate for another year" (ROFL!)... we will be in exactly the same place next year.
The only way this gets done is if it starts to hurt one side or the other.
I wish the owners would offer 40%, 4 year max contract, no guaranteed contracts, and free agency starts at 30 and then lock them out for 3 or 4 years if need be until they accept it.
The best news ever would be to see this union shattered, for good this time. |

You should understand how intertwined the U.S. and Canadian economies are, how Canada has suddenly flipped from a trade surplus to a trade deficit, and how the U.S. economy - Irish Blues[along with most if not all of the rest of the world] is nosing downward back into recession ... and then realize what that means for exchange rates.
Maybe the self-proclaimed economics guru around here will give you a half-assed explanation.
Who's going to pay the couple hundred millions of dollars for lease penalties to make that happen? And who's going to put up guarantees in case Team A is moved to some place in Canada and it doesn't work out as expected and the team loses even more money?
Great talking point, but it runs into trouble when you start looking at what it would entail.
I understand how much our economies are intertwined. That's why our Prime Minister is out making trade deals with Europe and China. He's out looking for business, while Obama is out raising money for his election. Did you know that the U.S. has not had a budget passed in 3 years? That in itself is a criminal act! |
