Am I the only one who kind of likes the salary cap? I like that it punishes teams for handing out bad/awful contracts and rewards smarter teams for getting better value per dollar spent. It obviously only works with revenue sharing in place though otherwise teams like the Isles, Panthers, Coyotes, etc would be screwed because of the cap floor. I prefer parity over a top heavy league personally.

No, I agree, for somewhat more cynical reasons (I think it's the best possible system for limiting GM stupidity). The cap floor is pretty misguided at best though.

I hope they're out the whole year and more, the players need to wake up take a 50/50 split. Which is more than fair IMO. - LeftCoaster
50 - 50 is fine but NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT FIXING THE GAME!
Shorten the schedule, delay the start, balance the schedule, remove the trapazoid...... instigtator..... friggen goalie equipment..... head shots..... armour plated elbow and shoulder pads.....
I'm intrigued at the possibility of a shortened season (this is also me being optimistic - I still refuse to believe another year will be lost until I see it.) I'm not sure if less games would make it more or less likely that they could make the playoffs. Either way, I don't think they're bad enough yet to be in that position, but if they get off to a bad start and have to make up a lot of ground in less games, who knows? It's almost a win win. - S Kaspar Rollins

This is a good point, at least with the last lockout they came out of it with a more exciting game (although this was totally unrelated to the labour battle)

I'm all for a salary cap, all the teams playing with the same amount of money to put a team together. But I still believe the NHL needs to reorganize itself. Certain markets don't work while others obviously would, and there are too many teams.

I used to think that it at least protected against deliberately cheap owners, but I now realize that it doesn't really do that that well, and there's no practical way to punish a team for going below the cap floor.

Players love the cap floor, it artificially inflates their salaries and sends the whole market into somewhat of a state of disarray.

Totally agree! I highly doubt that the schedule is reduced though, but it would make a lot of sense if they want the southern U.S. markets to generate more revenue per game and fill the seats. Instigator rule would be at the top of my list, it would definitely have the rats and cheap shot artists of the league thinking twice before doing something stupid. And I know that this might seem ironic coming from a Canucks fan, but IMO players need to be called for diving more and even fined for that crap, it's like watching soccer at times.

That's actually the first time I've seen a Canucks fan say something like this without a but and other names afterwards.
You've just risen to the top of my Canucks fan list.

I thought the same way, that was obviously the intended purpose but I agree that is sort of backfired if you take a look at the horrible contracts handed out over the past 14 months or so. The rapid increase of the cap and floor was the biggest flaw IMO.

Most of what you bring up here is non CBA related, but I agree with you whole heartedly on the diving BS! Kesler, H.Sedin & anyone else who dives should be given an immediate 10 minute misconduct and if they do it again it's a game. Get three and it's a one game suspension!! So sick of that crap!! Make me furious and it takes away from the game, the team and it's fans.

The current cap floor is higher than the original salary cap IIRC. But Ek actually has somewhat of a point for once - it's because of the increase in revenues, and who could have predicted that? Like I said, I still think the owners thought, at least up to a few years ago, that they had completely won. (Compare this to the recent NFL lockout, which most analysts saw coming because Tagliabue, by all reports, rammed a deal through that the owners didn't like so he could retire with his legacy intact.)

The 40% increase in the Canadian dollar vs the American dollar accounts for a large portion of that.

Indeed, another unpredictable thing. It doesn't get talked about enough, especially from people that think Canadian franchises will automatically make money.

Very true. It's amazing how recently all of a sudden, the NFL, NBA and now the NHL again have all had a lockout period. Obviously the state of the economy has played a part in it, but it's interesting how 3 of the 4 major sports have had major CBA negotiation issues.

In the NBA I think they had major issues with their system - a lot of teams were clearly losing money. In the NFL it was pure greed and you can't tell me otherwise. The same thing seems to be happening in the NHL.
Cue Don Fehr pointing out baseball has had no issues since the 95 strike, and happen to be the only sport without a cap.
