the islanders are a hockey team that pay hockey players; wouldnt it make sense that if they are cutting costs they would cut non-hockey related departments as opposed to the assets that make them a team? - LetsGoIsles[/quote]
It certainly would |

wouldnt those 3 players prove my point that they are willing to spend money (in this case, way too much money) on players? - LetsGoIsles
No. Not at all. They took the cheapest route to reach the floor with players with bigger cap hits(ex; Vis). You are discrediting your own point. |

the payroll in 2001 was the same as it is now. approx $40 mill. - Isles316
Yeah but in 2001 that 40 million was actually spent on the players who were playing. Not so much in 2012 |

I agree he is a 3rd/4th line physical player who hits everything in sight, fights and will chip 10 or so goals a year. I love the kid but he is what he is and there is nothing wrong with that. Every team needs a MM - Vukota
Every team does in fact need a Matt Martin........
But ours isnt signed.......nor was he extended last year. |

At the time they were willing to spend? Dude are we going back to 2001? Or are we talking about the Snow era. I thought that as islander fans we all understand that using anything Milbury era is a fo paux, and irrelevant nowadays. Or in your case, maybe its fopa... - kindlyrick
you must have been asleep when they resigned just about every kid on that team to extensions.... |

you are right but some on here treat him like he is the next Gretzky or something. He is ok and right now in his career he is not worth the money he probably thinks he is going to get |

Im not suggesting all 82 games, but when a team is losing 10 games or more in a row, changes need to be made. Remember when the isles put Andy Sutton in front of the net on the PP. If for no other reason to get it through some guys skulls that a certain type of play needs to be played. Conversely, it rewards guys like Martin who play hard night in and night out. - kindlyrick
I'll say this, I thought Cappy sticks with the same lines too long. I like that he lets them get chemistry but when guys like Rolston who dogged it got more ice time then Martin its b.s. I just think the one combo that worked all year was the JT,Mmoulson,PA trio. No need to mess with that. |

XX knows more about hockey than you. A lot more. He is dead on about Matt Martin. Martin is a 4th line winger on most NHL teams right now. A good 4th liner that has value, but nothing more. - Isles316
I'm beginning to feel a little uncomfortable in here today. |

Their payroll now is actually about $50. My point was they pay the same now for their players as they did in 2001. They really didnt have any more of a willingness to pay for guys then. But you are right. Too much money is being paid to guys that aren't playing. |

No it wasn't. The cap floor was $48.6 million last year and the Isles were up over $50. Their actual spending was about 40-42. |

I hear you, but JT is really such a special player that it wont be hard to find someone to play along side him and succeed. The one reason why im not all up in arms over Brad Boyes is because Doug Weight played with him, and i respect what he says. Say what you will about Weight, his a future Hall of Famer, and my kinda hockey player. If he's endorsing Brad Boyes, i gotta go with that...
Not to mention anytime a guy scores 40plus goals in the NHL, thats not small potatos |

Currently they are spending just over $40 million of actual money this upcoming year. Without Martin on the books. |

7 of that 40 million is Yashin and Dipietro..........add to that Viznovsky and his 5.6 when we dont even know if he's on the team yet, and that brings you back down to 29ish

Who? I haven't seen it. The guy is a good player as far as players like him go and he is doing a good job at a young age. That's a commodity. Not Gretzky but a commodity none the less. Especially on a club with a bunch of pansies. |

That's false. They couldn't make up 20 million in bonuses to reach floor. It could have been that when they had a zillion guys hurt. - Isles316
Im confused, but either way, we are talking about 12 million being used to make the cap floor, when one player was bought out, another player cant stay healthy, and the third is in arbitration to see wether he's actually on the team. So that 40 million is really 28 with my math, as of right now. |
