I'd prefer Raymond, Ballard & 2nd for .....well actually nobody on the leafs, nevermind.

I feel like some young guys who aren't on the radar yet may breakout this season or next and end up on the team, much like Doughty in 2010 - Yzerman has shown he isn't afraid to put youth on the team if that youth is playing better at the time.

Weber, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Letang Keith and Seabrook are very likely to make the team if healthy.

The last 1-2 spots will be a toss up between Myers, Subban, Burns, or possibly someone who isn't even an NHL regular yet, like Brandon Gormley, Ryan Murray, Dougie Hamilton, Simon Despres, etc - you never know who will break out season to season or sooner than expected...

Maybe even....Morgan Reilly? Probably not, he's too young, but he still probably has a better chance than Phaneuf.

Kieth and Seabrook will have to fight for their spot IMO.

The only Locks for the team are Weber and Doughty.

You are going to need speed to slow down break outs on the bigger ice surfaces and Phaneuf doesnt have that.

This is what my Defence would look like.

Weber - Doughty
Campbell - Kieth
Pieterangelo - Letang

Extras of Gardiner and Hamhuis (in case we run into the Americans)

Campbell is a smooth skating good lateral movement guy who can move the puck and defend who was also with Kieth in Chicago.

Pieterangelo is almost on Doughty's level so not a hard argument there, plus he is very responsible with the puck. Letang is fast and has an underrated defensive ability but his offensive game will be a big plus with the big ice.

In essence, the defense I would design would be about possession hockey, with the speed to get back into position should you get caught off gaurd.

If they go with old, slow bruser forwards though then the D core should change to match the forwards.
