Bieksa is 3rd on the D chart and I only have him that high because we havent seen Garrison in a Nucs jersey yet.
Bieksa seems to be the internal salary cap for our D core so I don't see Edler a Canuck next season. He's not going to accept Bieksa money.... - boonerbuck
I know you're opinion of Bieksa, and I agree with much of it. Still like a lot of what he brings to the table when he's on, though.
I think Gillis will be willing to go a bit higher than the 4.6 that Bieksa makes, if only because the cap has gone up (maybe they offer him the same percent of the new cap), but Edler is also younger, more valuable, and has more potential than Bieksa, and Garrison as well, and Gillis knows it.
I think Gillis will still expect a bit of a discount, though, and won't go too much higher.
He's better than Bieksa. Come on. Hamhuis is better defensively but Edler is the best offensively. Also, Edlers package is the best. He can bring everything to the table. It's about being consistent for him. I find it laughable that a lot of high up media members had him, at the halfway point, in the top 5 for Norris. He tailed off at the end of the season now everybody thinks he's not that good? Hilarious. - Boinker
Behind Doughty, Chara, Karlsson, Weber there is a glut of possible guys that could be talked about that go in the top 5 from last year (Carlson, Edler, Staal, Ekman-Larsson, Yandle, Lidstrom, Campbell)
It's not like it's TOTALLY impossible that one of those guys could be talked as a top 5 over Edler. I still believe Edler is the beneficiary of the team as a whole. You could argue that Hamhuis could go in that Top 5 list too if you have people splitting on whose Vancouver's best Defenseman.
And thanks for showing me one hit that Elder made. We get it, Edler is physical and Enstrom is not quite on the same parity as him. Defensively though? Enstrom is a pretty solid all around and positionally.

I think more relevant is the salaries of the guys in that list. If Edler is in the conversation with those guys, he'll get the same kind of money. Personally, I think he's well worth paying. Hopefully he'll take a slight pay cut to stay on a strong team, but with the kind of money Suter got, I'd imagine anything less than $6m to stay is already a discount.
ESPN had him on their top 5 list for the majority of the last 2 seasons. It's certainly not a stretch. I'm not surprised you would say this, however, considering your disdain for everything Canuck related. Clown shoes. - Fosco
Well that settles it. If ESPN the network renowned the world over for their hockey knowledge said it, it must be true.

I was impressed with the season Bieksa had two years ago and gave him plenty of credit for it and we both agree Edler and Hammer are better...so I don't want to go into what I actually think of him. Thats a different topic
I don't see Edler taking less than 6 mil per and after seeing how quick Gillis walked from Ehrhoff, I see him spending the money elsewhere...

I'll agree that ESPN's hockey coverage isn't the best, although it was Lebrun who compiled the list, who is very knowledgable—if you read my post, all I said was that "it isn't a stretch" to think he could be a Norris candidate based on his perrenial inclusion on said list.

I think it's a slightly different situation than Ehrhoff's contract.
Edler has much more potential than Ehrhoff, and has shown he has the potential to be much more defensively sound than Ehrhoff will ever be, as well as being more physical. The fact that Edler is a Canuck draft pick, and has been developed by the Canucks his entire pro career could also be a factor.
If the Canucks feel they can't retain him, they should look to trade him.
Know wonder why Gillis wants so much for Luongo, other than Garrison, their team looks the exact same.

Can this team get it done in the competitive Western conference? - t_leafs21
They were the one seed out west last year. If u ask me getting rid of Luongo is addition by subtraction an he is the reason they haven't won a cup. He just goes soft in the playoffs.

Really? Don't think 2011 finals have anything to do with the Sedins disappearing for the whole finals and the whole team pretty much not scoring?
