Amazing is right. It was a combo of both foundations and soil yes. Foundations were three meters lol.

the size of the foundations is based upon the soil strength.. i do not know the loads of the building but three meters is actually not tiny and i am guessing in several areas that would be suitable for the foundation. But like i said boring.

i am pretty sure back in 1192 or whatever they did not have drilling rigs to actually perform a "soils investigation" nor did they have the knowledge of soil properties that we do today

it isn't that he necessarily screwed up the foundations.. it was that the soil underneath the building was inconsistent. one side of the building had much softer soils than the other thus it compressed at a higher rate than the other side. I find it amazing that in the time they were able to keep it standing.

not sure what all the have doan to it.. i know they did some jet grouting under the one side to stiffin the soil up and they may have put some anchors in as well..
