How'd all that calling Nashville's bluff work out?

Poile faces a tough road ahead, and honestly, the revenues need to increase. As much balls as it took for Holmgren to make the offer, it may have taken more for Nashville's owners to match it.

The good news?

Still have a talented young team, nice chunk of cap space and plenty of options. It's a disappointment that Weber won't be joining the party, but they still have a solid team.

they will dominate the east.....rangers are good under the cap now and happy with nash in two years theyll lose players. Pitt----crosby is one hit from retirement. who else really scares you?

Boston will be very good, very little dropoff from Thomas to Rask, Carolina will be much improved.

I also think Ottawa is starting to build something. Anderson is very underrated in net. He outplayed the "King" in a 7 game series.

Its Christmas Eve.

The shiny red truck I was expecting (as recently as this morning), well, let's say it aint going to happen. In its place is a stinky, smelling, festering turd.

Merry Christmas to all.

undeniably true. at this point, I would explore bogo, but regardless the cost would be high.

At this point just stand pat, re-assess the needs at the deadline. A reactionary move in the wake of not getting Weber would be a poor decision.

Who knows if Nashville even called and asked Homer to make a trade. Seems like Nashville went with the match it or take 4 1st rounders. They had no choice but to keep their franchise player. It would of set a bad example to the fan base and it also showed other NHL teams that the small markets wont just get bullied by the bigger markets. Took some serious stones to match but they did.

i never said it would be easy but these rookies destroyed Pitt who was the hands down favorite to win the cup...they got burned by jersey but thats ok its a lesson for them.

the biggest reason I hope homer does more is because we simply aren't as good as we were at the end of last season and I don't like seeing such a relatively young team take a step back...want forward momentum.

I'm just being dramatic. And feeling out a new character perhaps.

I said it before, and believe it now, that we are the #2 team in the East. Maybe 2a/2b with Boston.

Holmgren never even gave them the chance to bluff. He thought the sheet was so dastardly that they'd never consider matching and waited for Poile to call him and beg for terms.

The only way to upgrade through UFA is Doan or Semin. To upgrade the defense the Flyers will have to make a trade.

There's a couple names out there that would help, Carlo Coliacovo being the best fit for their needs, but I guess that failing that we'll see what Gervais, Gus and MAB can do for the short term.

Not sure there are any other moves worth pursuing. You can guarantee Doan isn't coming here.

I don't look at our young players as sacred possessions. if we are forward heavy, let's make a fair trade to acquire a dman...and not a myopic move like the JVR giveaway.

A big piece on D would certainly help, but in the meantime, having a team-wide commitment to defensive play would be a bonus.
- tangent_man

absolutely

i think having that big time number one guy on the blue line is the best way to go about building a contender. it certainly isn't the only way though. great team defense is definitely a good recipe for success

The problem is the only names I've heard are Yandle, Boyle, JayBo, Visnovsky (if appeal goes through) and possible Enstrom.

I wasn't shocked that they matched. I never saw it as more than 60-40 that Weber was coming here.
