Unfortunately, most of the professional commentators are spewing wind. And not from their mouths.
The Weber miss is truly devastating. Really, I think this move wrecked things for the Flyers, Preds, and Weber himself.
As I have been saying, Bobby Ryan.
And when it happens, which it will, please don't be surprised this time. I'm trying to help, damnit.

Indeed. Net result is he probably ruined a long relationship with Poile, while deflating the entire fan base in one fell swoop. - PLindbergh31

I know but as a hypothetical....it sounds like all sides in the matter are pissed...preds still have to pay the 13 mill. what happens if they dont because weber going awol? - Philly1980
A lot had to do with their fan base. They had no choice but to match the offer. Its also a case of showing NHL teams that the big markets cant just throw money and think they can get what they want from the smaller markets. |

An unhappy player is not something a franchise wants.
Unless your franchise is in a hick state that rhymes with Gennessee. |

I thought you'd be happy they didn't trade any players for Weber. It was never a realistic outcome that they wouldn't match and get draft picks. It'd have taken a big package to do it. You should be happy the team wasn't "gutted" as you put it the other day. - eayost
I wouldn't have advocated gutting the team to get Weber, a fair package for both sides would have been the best outcome looking at the situation in hindsight. |

Don't flip now. You were one (like myself) who said make them match or accept the 4 1st rounders. I'm not nearly disappointed b/c I was willing to lose Weber. |
|

|
Then why did they actually fill out the paper work to match the deal? - eayost
A show for the fans.....i dont know im hanging on a ledge here |

Nothing wrong with disappointment but you had to factor in the chances that Nashville was willing to match the offer. It's their franchise player (after they already lost Suter) and basically the only way to show the fans they were committed to building a championship team.
He was a RFA and the Flyers did everything they could to try and get him. We dont even know if Nashville even offered to make another deal but rather just decide its offer sheet or nothing. They stuck to their word and matched. - stveshdy
I understand. You make valid points. Still doesn't mean it's not a kick to the teeth.
Don't think the timing of the Nash trade by the Rangers wasn't made in mind to the Flyers losing out on Weber. I'm sure Sather may have heard some scuttlebutt and pushed hard for the Nash deal to get done, closing yet another avenue for the Flyers to improve. The last two days have sucked royally. No way around it. |

I have no problem with Homer going for it. I admire that. He has consistently shown good is not good enough. He wants players who have the edge that will bring home a cup. Thats why Richie and Carter were let go: they cannot be the alpha dogs in a contending team.
As for being happy with the team, he has to say that, but its clear he knows its not anywhere near a contender. You don't lay out simultaneous 100 m contracts and then offer sheet someone, and in the mean time be prepared to let (currently) mid-level talents like Jagr, Carle go and take it slow on Voracek's contract if you believe that. The entire summer they had planned to free up as much resources as they could to make a splash. They went 0 for 3, but I am totally ok with them trying. |

Yeah, I did say that. I never believed Nashville would match. I miscalculated as Holmgren did. |

So many people were wrong on this. No way to really tell - we're all outsiders. I am shocked the Flyers made the move in the first place, but not the result. I really felt the Flyers would have to offer a lot, and I have no idea if the Flyers were allowed to discuss that.
Life moves on. It was quite the ride, and gave a lot of good conversation and debate here. You are all truly wonderful. Even the dark side.

Nash wasn't coming here as Columbus wanted centers and the only centers they could trade are Couturier and Schenn. If they weren't available for Weber, they certainly weren't available for Nash. I think Columbus takes the Rangers package over the Flyers even if the Flyers was a bit better technically. |

When you frame it that way, the Flyer caboose took it a little from the blue & red. |

Montreal will match the offer. Only reason it made sense here with Weber is b/c of the money and Nashville being small market team. |

Not that Nashville will want to deal with Homer again but if they did would be interesting they'd want to move one of Jonathon Blum or Roman Josi
