But let's clarify what I said. I was talking about re-signing all their other player, not specifically Weber. As that's been brought up as an issue. - MJL
Oh no I wasnt saying that directly to you.. I was just furthering your statement. No matter what they need to sign guys.. and that has never been an issue (reaching cap floor). Its the actual money paid thats the issue. |

I think Weber has no problem with staying in Nashville. Sure, he signed the sheet, but probably to get ownership off the dime. The worst that can happen, if they don't match is that he becomes a rich man in a great organization. If they do match then he becomes a rich man in a place where he is emotionally attached and ownership has shown him the love. I don't buy the disgrunted player scenario if he stays. - 2731color
he would prefer to be a flyer though |

Doesn't that kind of say they can match but they can't? If its going to cause financial issues down the road or have an affect on icing a competitve team what sense does it make? Thats basically saying they don't have the money then or it would be done. This wouldnt be a concern, IMO. - stveshdy
I guess maybe it's semantics then. There is no question in my mind that they have the ability to match. It depends on the financial projections, how they view their team going forward, and how much more of an investment the ownership is willing to make.

So what gives you the impression that they can match this offer sheet? |

The idea to match Weber "because they need to reach the cap floor" is flawed thinking. - jak521
only 7.8 mil of his year one pay out will go to the floor # as well......The Other 6 mil they have to pay does not count....these are hard numbers ....Tough call but I really think they will match....As most of their media has stated...."put up or shut up"...For a team that has lost $ every year thats tough to swallow.
The only bright spot IMO or reason to hope as a Flyers fan is that they may say "lets take the Picks or a deal and have the new CBA to protect these assets going forward"....because quite frankly he is a tainted asset at this point with a presumably easier more manageable CBA on the horizon. By tainted I mean if the new CBA was in place chances are this deal would have been for alot less term and possibly $.... |

Maybe, but doesn't he become a rich man in an organization that can no longer afford to surround him with talent? - Hextall271
True but maybe he's gotten so used to those warmer winters that he doesn't care. All kidding aside who really knows how he feels. |

After their owners meet today....there may be contact!!! if not then it can be assumed that they gave the go a head to match. |

As I've said to you many times before. All they need right now to match this offer, is 13M. This isn't about if they can. It's about if they will.
Keep in mind when analysts and other NHL people state that they can't match this offer. They aren't saying that they don't have the capability to match it. They're saying that it doesn't make sense for the future for them to match it.

I agree. Also, thats kind of my point. They have the money to match but in reality they dont. Whats better giving Weber 26M in 11 months or adding a bunch of players for that price? Thats the question they will have to answer.
This is a team that didn't want to sign Weber for 3 yrs and 21M last offseason. I question them putting up this money to keep him. |

In two three years when their defense is off EL deals we will get a good laugh. |

I think you have to clarify that. What were the specifics of that contract? How much upfront money that Weber wanted. Again that is the issue for Nashville.

Yes, they do. When you sign most players, you don't need the money up front. You just need to meet payroll on the 15th and the 30th of every month during the Season. Look at the Rinne deal. 7M salary, but no up front money.
No question that matching puts them in a bind. As I've said many times before. They can absolutely match. The question is if they choose to and is it in their best interests. At this point, I believe they feel it is in their best interest to work out a deal. - MJL
I think that is right. I also think that the more Nashville thinks about it, the more they want to do a deal.

no contact between the preds and weber? now that is odd. - Don'tForgetTocchet
I wonder if there's anything left to discuss. Preds and Flyers can still talk trade pieces, etc. Preds and Weber? The contract is out there. It's simply up to Nashville as to whether or not they're going to sign on the dotted line. |

Yea, that all of one defenseman that is on an EL deal is really going to bring them down

Whatever he wanted can't be what hes going to get in this contract. He is about to get paid 26M in 11 months and the contract was only worth 21M in 3 years.

The reason behind that is b/c it doesn't make an financial sense and they basically can't afford him long term and still be competitve (b/c of the money). |

Now that is definitely true. In hindsight they are probably wishing that they agreed to that deal, if it was truly offered. But I believe that Poile has been hamstrung by management in not wanting to give out up front money. |

if they were trying to match i'd think they would be talking to him and telling him they were still going to put a good team around him or something...
but what do i know. must be a weird situation for all involved. |
