Even if Nashville matches, I'm still buying a Weber Flyers jersey. F' it

Nashville wants the Flyers to take the bait. They are desperate here b/c their franchise player is on the line. They either have to match and pretty much crush their franchise for years, let him go for 4 1st, or bluff and get the Flyers to offer more/better players.
- stveshdy

why can't they do this -

Poile: look, we both know 4 1sts isn't enough and we can't afford this monster contract, but have to match.
Homer: well, what if we agreed to trade a few players for a couple of our picks back.
Poile: Sounds good, we won't match and talk next week.
Homer: Great.
Poile: Hey Homer, It's me again, you stopped answering my calls ever since we declinded to match the OS, please gimme a call back.
Poile: Hey, it's me again, I was just taking a whiz, thought you might have called, okay later.

I agree with bill on this.

@ff_marcello @JSportsnet my view is all team execs speak from self-interest. This one put heat on PHI and NSH simultaneously.

Maybe.. on the Nash thread, apparently Preds owner Brett wilson tweeted that the owners have deep pockets, covet the cup as much as anyone and for Weber not to pack his bags yet.

A big difference is going to be that there is no movement clause. And hence no limited number of teams that can be involved. So with there being one less scoring line forward available, and possibly more teams in the bidding. The price for Ryan went up.
- MJL

due to the circumstances surrounding, ryan's value should have been higher in the first place, imo. not sure whether yesterday's deal helped or hurt it, though. i just can't see teams parting with four assets like that for ryan even though he's arguably a better player, making 2.7 less per year. nash has this superstar reputation, ryan just doesn't, imo. at least not on nash's level (perception-wise), so i feel like someone doesn't pony up something similar.

ryan should have greater trade value than nash imho, but i can't imagine someone giving up more than what NYR did for nash.

you think NYR gave a lot????

The real question is if Poile calls Homer and says up your trade offer and we wont match, does Homer believe him? Is it likely Homer says okay what are you looking for? Or what we offered is the max I'm willing to go, take it or leave it?

You're not the brightest bulb in the box, are you?

Anyone with half a brain would have realized the moment Sather said "We kicked the hell out you twice in the Stanley Cup", he spoke truly.

Both the '85 Oilers and their '87 counterparts did, in fact, kick the the hell out of 'you' in the Finals.

.. and he was speaking at the event representing the Rangers as THEIR gm.

Also, I find it funny that he considers the 7 game war in 87 as "kicking the hell" out of the Flyers.

yes and no. they could afford to give up those assets due to their strong system, but not every team has nhl ready players waiting to step into top-9 forward and top-4 d roles.

I don't think ANYONE knows......but tomorrow will go back and forth. I'm sure the flyers will up the offer a little bit, but no Schenn or Coots. would you do Voracek, Read, Mesz, MAB and 2 first rounders?

I went from 70-30 Flyers end up with Weber to 20-80.
- jak521

Because an NHL exec, who could easily be working for the Pens or Rangers, said it you're droping the percentages that much??

This Wilson guy might have money but if this was an easy decision this would of been done already b/c its their franchise player on the line. I don't believe a word that comes out of Nashville right now.
