if visnovsky is subpar than what were all of the islanders defensive players considered??
beggars cant be choosers!!
if he were on the team last year, with those stats he would have been the BEST offensive defenseman on the teaam...clearly not subpar relative to what we have!! - LetsGoIsles
CRAP!
Your comparing him to a bunch of crap aside from a couple of players. Hamonic and Streit (who had a SUBPAR YR) with his -26 +-.
I think your reaching here. We all know how pitiful our "D" Corp was last yr. And no one was comparing Viz to our sorry bunch. The comparison was to his previous seasons.
Truth is, the Isles can probably get Visnovsky to waive this grievance if they went to him with a more lucrative offer. Throw another year onto his deal with a raise from what he's making now and I wouldn't be surprised if Visnovsky "miraculously" changed his mind about his grievance.
The question I have is, does anyone really want Visnovsky on the team now that he's made it clear that he doesn't want to play for the Isles based on this decision to file a grievance (I don't care what his agent says, the only reason Visnovsky filed this grievance was to get out of coming to Long Island. If he was traded to Detroit or somewhere else desirable, he never files this grievance)? The partial and biased fan in me says, "no". But, the practical, objective observer in me says "yes, even though he doesn't want to be here, this team needs him if they are going to be better than last year's team".
I hate to say it, but if this team is going to improve, its going to have to stick it out with guys they trade for who don't necessarily want to be on the Islanders. Right now, most veteran guys around hockey probably want no part of Long Island. If you trade for one of these guys, most of them are not going to be happy about the deal.

He also only played 68 games though. If you look at the numbers to see how many points he'd have hit in a full 82 game season it would come out to 32-33 points, which is better than his two years on Edmonton. Over his 8 year career his average point total just just a shade over 42/year.
So if you go by the literal definition of sub-par, technically yes he did have a slightly below average year. But there's not enough regression from the mean for me to think that he doesn't have something left in the tank. Only two seasons ago he hit 68 points, and (if he actually plays here) he's going to have a vastly increased role.

I'll still take him. Very few quality players want to come here. It's why we have to turn to the trade market to get them in the first place...they're not coming here as FAs. Even if they don't publicly file grievances, it's safe to say there's a good chance that players we trade for aren't doing backflips after being sent here. But we need good players and they don't have a choice in the matter if they want to play in the NHL, as Nabby came to realize. I'd expect Snow to have a very long conversation with Vis to make sure he's at least going to put forth the effort. The only way I don't want the guy here is if he mails it in every night out of some childish grudge against "the system."

Do you believe that the Islanders are willing to spend near the cap ceiling and just can't get players to take their money, or do you think it's more than mere coincidence that virtually all of their moves seem to bring the team near the cap floor without going too far over? The answer to that is probably at least part of the answer to your question. If the goal is to comply with the floor and not go too far over it, then it doesn't matter what d-men are available, the Isles wouldn't pursue them with big offers if they're already near the floor. If you don't believe there's any salary constraints, and that the last several seasons hovering at the cap floor since the Lighthouse didn't get approved are just coincidence, then it makes sense to dig deeper and ask about who we should be pursuing. - UIF
No I definitley don't believe this team has the means to spend near the ceiling. However, I do think the team is willing to address sensible acquisitions if it benefits the organization. Past offers have suggested the team is willing to spend on free agents but those free agents have gone elsewhere for less.
I think everyone realizes we won't see this ownerships full spending efforts until 2015 and I'd do the same damn thing if I were him. That said, blindly saying "we should of gotten a good defensemen" as though they're out there ripe for the picking is off the mark. The Isles couldn't make a Weber type offer to anyone. Certainly this ownership could never fork out $56 million over 3 years to a player.
So what are we left with? We're left with guys like Visnovsky.

Look back at UFA signings and trades since July 1. There were others.
The point being is that this could turn out to be just a waste of f'in time. - jmo16
There were other names...uh...ok. Now you have to ask, were they going to come here. Would they have chosen the isles over the destination they landed with?

Not what I wrote. I had said he was an upgrade from Isles D. CLEARLY, you read what you want. - brodydog29
as do you...."Lubo was good because he's a definite upgrade to any of the guys from last year. But also a negative because he's in his later 30's, maybe only a yr left in his tank and had a very sub par year last yr."

but what does that have to do with anything??? why are we comparing what he was to what he is now??? comparing apples and oranges.
all i care about is what is he VS. what do we have??? and quite frankly what he is now is ALOT better than most of what he have. so did he have a personal "subpar" season? compared to the 2010 season yes. did he have a subpar season compared to what WE should interested in?? hell no!!! and in fact, id take 5 players with lubomir visnovsky subpar 2011 seasons stats for 2012 season in a heartbeat

Then they should be much more vocal about that. They got to the floor this offseason, and the team's only beat writer puts out there that they're pretty much done. That sends a certain message, and one that doesn't scream, "We're ready to win." Personally, I'm not sure if Staple was right about that...clearly with or without Vis there's more to be done and hopefully Snow realizes that as well. But if Staple wasn't right, then the Isles should get out in front of that...if they're willing to do more and spend more, they should call Staple and ask him to write an article citing Snow as saying the team is certainly not done and is still actively looking to make improvements. Heck, say where you're looking to make improvements.
I don't know why Vis waited a month to file this grievance, but if it had anything to do with waiting to see what more the Islanders were going to do to improve, he couldn't have been too impressed...not just with the moves or lack thereof, but with the team falling off the radar and not responding to multiple reports that they're finished. I know the Isles are not big on going public with things, but PR is crucial when you're already a pariah, imo. No one believes the Isles are willing to do what it takes to win, whether that's true or not. That's a perception that has to change if we want to avoid situations like this, imo.

You may be on to something UIF. Why one month later? Probably took a good look at the roster.
Lol rangers got Nash and a 3rd for peanuts
Exiron is realistically a 3-4 defender, duby is a 3C, anisimov is bad secon or decent 3rd winger and the first will be like 24-30 most likely

Certainly in the field of dealing with the media, you will not hear me defend the organization. Their failure to address matters through the media unfortunately plays into any predisposed personality disorders the dissatisfied portion of fans want to label them with. I don't believe for one second that the Isles decided less than a week into free agency that they were satisfied to wait and see what cap casualties would come about, so in that regard, no I don't totally buy in to what Staple was saying. Still, the Isles are spending $5 million this year on Lub and $5 million last year on Rolston becasue these are the type of $5 million players that they can get. Either guys over the hill with little left or traded players. There are lots of guys we'd rather they spend $5 million on but it's becoming more and more apparent that they were never options in the first place. This problem will only be cured by building a successful program from within.

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Tough day for Blue Jackets and Islanders in many ways.
