On June 6, 2023, the Columbus Blue Jackets completed a three team trade alongside the Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings.

Columbus acquired defenseman Ivan Provorov from the Philadelphia Flyers at a 30% salary reduction, courtesy of the LA Kings.

Columbus gave up the 2023 first round draft pick from the Los Angeles Kings, 22nd overall in the upcoming June draft in Nashville.

The Blue Jackets also gave up a conditional 2024 second round draft pick, that could be pushed to 2025. The condition is to the Columbus general manager at the concussion of the first round in 2024.

Former Columbus defenseman Kevin Connauton and Traverse City invitee Hayden Hodgson were moved to the Kings. The Kings are holding onto 30% of Provorov’s salary

The Flyers picked up the two mentioned draft picks from Columbus. They also picked up a 2023 second round pick from the Kings, D Helge Grans, D Sean Walker, and G Cal Petersen.

Provorov was drafted seventh overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, one pick before Zach Werenski. Provorov is a Russian born defenseman from Yaroslavl.

He has been in 532 games with the Flyers, producing 65 goals and 152 assists for 217 career points. He was a -28 with Philadelphia, and put up 196 penalty minutes.

His sophomore year was his best production at 41 points in 82 games (0.5PPG). He tends to be a healthy player, having played 4 full seasons. He has only seen the playoffs twice, and put up 3 goals, 8 assists, 11 points in 16 postseason contests.

Provorov is a top four defenseman on this team and a power play quarterback. He will replace Gavrkov’s minutes from last season.

Columbus keeps the third and 34th overall picks. Hopefully 2024 goes as 25 is the stronger draft. That may depend on success in the regular season.

Trading within your division is a tough move, so this may bite the Flyers early.

Personal stuff aside, tough trade overall. The 22nd pick would be helpful to mold internally. They might’ve seen something different to move the pick to get a solidified player with the new coach over a project.
