The Columbus Blue Jackets lose to the Arizona Coyotes for their seventh consecutive loss by the final score of 3-2.
All five goals came in the final 40 minutes, so if you were late to the game, you missed nothing early. The juice came much later for the boys, and the tea came later for the stars.
Period II
Damon Severson opened the scoring for his second as a Blue Jacket less than two minutes in from Russians Dmitry Vokornov and Ivan Provorov.
Provorov is the first player to hit 10 points in the season for the Jackets.
Barrett Hayton evened the game with his second of the season as well with the assists going to Matt Kesselring and Matt Dumba.
Period III
Arizona scored two goals in 28 questions that ultimately decided the fate of the Blue Jackets’ night.
Logan Cooley got a power play goal for his second career goal from Sean Durzi and Clayton Keller.
Lawson Crouse would be credited with the eventual game winning goal with his seventh of the season with the only assist coming from Nick Bjugstad.
Severson scored again for the home side with his third of the season with Zach Werenski and Alexandre Texier getting the assists.
Werenski also joined Provorov to hit 10 points.
Arizona rookie Logan Cooley was my player to watch, and did not disappoint. The West Mifflin, PA native had his second career NHL goal, 4 shots on goal, and was a -1 in 14:38TOI.
Connor Ingram had 39 saves on 41 shots, deserving first star of the game.
Ariozna lost forwards Barrett Hayton (short term) and Mattias Maccelli (unknown) due to injuries in the game. This will hurt them for the next little while before 2024, but it might take the wind out of their sails as these are two of the top producers.
Dmitry Voronkov was my Columbus player to watch, having an assist with 4 shots on goal in 16:36TOI. The Russian power forward is at 8 points in 11 games since being recalled from AHL Cleveland.
Elvis Merzlikins had 3 goals allowed on 32 shots; just not consistent enough for a $5M goalie. Look at Jack Campbell, and he’s approaching that slowly. There’s no goalie hope, more will falter. Management is failing to provide any confidence to the team aside rearranging the spare young forwards to mess up their development.
Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine were both benched in the third for lack of production and effort. Just wasn’t there. Vincent can’t continue to go to this to hope they will rebound the next game.
CBJ THREE STARS OF THE GAME
1. Damon Severson — 2 goals (3)
2. Ivan Provorov — assist (10)
3. Zach Werenski — assist (9)
Washington and Philadelphia previews before the game. Results blog Monday.
