With an extra day of breathing room, let’s review what has happened in Ohio valley through the first ten games, with thoughts and notes from the rest of the development of the team.
1. Elvis the Same
What a disappearing act since the contract extension. Leading them to the playoffs the year after Bob, getting locked up, and not being the same goalie. After his illness, he seems like the 22-23 version that will keep the team in the basement. With a beefed up defensive roster, they’re still losing games they shouldn’t. Early season points matter.
2. Kent Johnson Rumors
Kent Johnson switched agencies and was demoted after being a healthy scratch. It’s shocking how a top five pick is being buried after an impressive performance with Michigan. He was snubbed in the Calder race last season, and is suddenly dismissed by Vincent.
He’s already produced with the CBJ, AHL, and NCAA. It’s baffling.
3. Rookie Coach Rookie Mistakes
Pascal Vincent is learning the ropes as a new NHL head coach on what to do and how to win. A 0.500 start is not bad, but not where the management of the team views them. The coach will need at least a half a season.
4. Adam Fantilli Holding His Own
Fantilli has been strong to start the year. Six points in ten games. He is a top six forward already on this team. He could easily compete to be the top center by the end of the year. Nothing flashy, but consistent. Adam Fantilli is holding his own.
5. Dmitry Vokornov Here to Stay
What a pleasing surprise. The prospect has held off with four points and a fight so far in his Calder year. A bright spot on the young Union Blue, he has gone from a Final Cut in training camp to not full time on the third line.
6. Ivan Provorov Leading the Way
Freed from Tortorella (in his eyes), he is now at 8 points through his first ten games with Columbus. All assists, no goals, the Russian defender feels he’s back in a system. The offense is showing for it, while not having the best plus minus.
7. David Jiricek Over the Millions
Pascal Vincent is choosing the rookie defender over the experienced players making millions of dollars sitting in the press box between Adam Boqvist and Andrew Peeke. Peeke played top pair minutes here late in the season with the injuries. Sure, that may have exposed him, but they can at least do right by the defender that signed his extension before the season. Jiricek is bound to be a top pair defender, but it seems rushed to get him reps to only play around 10 minutes a night.
8. Johnny Hockey Problem
Only goal is an empty netter. Lack of any other offensive production. Not producing like he has in his prime Calgary years. Wonder if the off-season and lack of consistent healthy teammates may have taken a toll so far on Gaudreau in his Columbus tenure
9. Laine Injury
I just hope he is healthy soon. Him and Fantilli and Gaudreau need to get going together. Just an ugly hit by one of the Flames’ top defenders.
10. Eric Robinson Demoted
What a surprise. One of the factors in getting Gaudreau, and being part of the solid fourth line last season is barely producing with the AHL. Something has to be up.
