Calgary Flames (20-18-5, 45 pts) vs Arizona Coyotes (20-18-2, 44 pts)

Last Ten: Calgary (6-4-0) Arizona (5-5-0)

Time: 7:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.

TV: Sportsnet One, Sportsnet West, ESPN+, Bally Southwest

After two full days off, the Calgary Flames return to action tonight for a potential grudge match with Arizona. While the Flames may have made easy work of the Coyotes last Thursday, André Tourigny’s upstart crew dusted themselves off and hammered the Minnesota Wild 6-0 two days later. With Calgary also coming off a solid 3-1 win over Vegas that same night, the table is set for a fun one as the snow falls in Calgary.

A few thoughts, notes, and observations on the game.

Markstrom Sits
The top peg on Calgary’s goaltending depth chart will miss tonight’s game due to an undisclosed lower body injury. Not the worst news. Jacob responds well to getting a few days of rest. Markstrom has a 7-3-0 record, .936 save percentage, and 2.02 goals against average since returning from a fractured finger on Dec. 18.

So Does Dustin
In response, Dustin Wolf has been called up from the Wranglers. Vladar gets the start tonight, and we’ll see what happens in the next game.

Sharky & the Goalman
It’s hard to imagine we don’t see more offence out of these two tonight. With a goal and an assist against Vegas, the Texas Tiger now has 34 points in 34 games since Nov. 1. Sharangovich, meanwhile, has five goals in his last three games. The 6-foot-2 Belarusian put up a hat trick on the Coyotes during their last meeting.

Much Ado About Nothing
Elliotte Friedman dropped some cryptic info during a Saturday Headlines segment over the weekend.

OK. I went further into how Markstrom is now caught in a Catch-22 regarding his trade status on Monday, but what are your thoughts here? What sort of price do you think the Flames are asking for the 33-year-old who is currently playing some of the best hockey of his life?

One issue is that there haven’t been many blockbuster goalie trades lately to set a trade price. Joonas Korpisalo was dealt last season for Jonathan Quick, a conditional first-round pick in 2023 and a third-round pick in 2024 to the Blue Jackets; but top four defenceman Vladislav Gavrikov went with him. Also, Korpisalo was a pending UFA. Not a great trade comparable.

With the goalie market currently heating up, who knows what the current ask may be?

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during some of Conroy’s recent chats with other general managers.
