Shootouts Continue To Haunt Devils As They Fall To Capitals

After a disappointing shootout loss to the Maple Leafs the Devils were looking to get back on track Saturday afternoon at home.

They were unable to do so as, after taking a 2-1 lead over the Capitals in the 3rd, they conceded a late goal and eventually lost in a shootout once again.

Thoughts:

1) It's always tough to lose a game when you lead in the 3rd period but, like in Toronto, the Devils probably got the result they deserved.

At 5 v 5 the Capitals carried play for much of the afternoon. Neither team generated a ton in terms of high-danger chances but the Caps out attempted the Devils 48-29 and out chanced them 19-15.

2) Cory Schneider posted a .931 save percentage and held the best offense in the NHL to two goals in 65 minutes of hockey. He did his job; he just didn't get the help he needed.

3) Joseph Blandisi once again was a threat almost every time he touched the ice. He had a team-high four scoring chances (three were high-danger), a goal and an assist in the losing effort. He also did a nice job of driving play up ice with several end-to-end rushes that led to shots.

4) Reid Boucher was 11th among Devils forwards in ice time with just 11:14. He had a couple good looks and was one of three players on the team to finish even or better in terms of 5 v 5 shot attempt differential. I'd like to see him get a good look alongside Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri on the 2nd unit.

5) It was not a banner night for the Bobby Farnham - Stephen Gionta - Jordin Tootoo line. The Devils were out attempted 10-3 with that unit on the ice and at least one member of that unit was on for both goals against.

6) Eric Gelinas came out even in possession but was on for both goals against while the Devils were out attempted 15-3 with Seth Helgeson on the ice at even-strength.

I think Damon Severson should return to the lineup in favor of either player. Preferably Helgeson, though, as Gelinas' shot is a good weapon to have on the man advantage; although I'd be comfortable with Severson taking his spot on the PP.
