It has long been rumored, if not assumed, Derek Ryan will sign in Calgary when free agency begins.
Nothing is done until it is done, but this appears to be a case of where there's smoke, there's fire.
Everyone will play the coach's pet card – and there is some truth to that. But Ryan is a legitimately good depth player and he'd fill a need.
Through two NHL seasons Ryan has tallied 67 points in 147 games played, which equates to 37 points per 82 games.
He's proven to be a capable producer at 5v5 as well. This past season Ryan finished 5th in points per 60 among 13 eligible Carolina forwards (400+ minutes). His total would have also ranked 5th on the Flames.
Ryan's possession numbers are really good, he's a career 56.1% faceoff man, he's a right-handed shot, and he can play special teams. There's a lot to like. His contract should be reasonable in both cost and term, too.
If the Flames are able to sign Ryan, he will really help a bottom-6 that desperately needed it.
