With training camps set to open in just over two weeks (that's exciting, isn't it?), unsigned free agents are starting to take what they can get and accepting professional tryouts.
Tanner Glass was among the latest to do so, as he is committed to joining the Calgary Flames in camp on a tryout basis.
Glass has played in 511 NHL regular season games but just 11 of those came last year, as he spent the majority of the season in Hartford of the AHL. There, Glass registered six goals, 15 points, and 86 penalty minutes in 57 games.
There is no harm in bringing in a player for a look with no strings attached but I fail to see the point in giving Glass a PTO.
Forget about being a useful and productive player in the NHL, Glass struggled immensely to provide anything of value in the AHL.
I understand some in the Flames' front office like old time hockey and value physical players -- that's 100% fine if they can play a little -- but players like Glass and Luke Gazdic, who they signed earlier in the summer, will do a lot more harm than good to a team's chances of winning.
The team just rid itself of physical anchors like Lance Bouma and Deryk Engelland. They don't need to replace them with more.
