The Penguins haven't swung a blockbuster trade yet but Kyle Dubas is throwing darts. He continues to rack up depth players who have topped out near the 40 point in the NHL.
The latest two players are Vinnie Hinostroza and Andreas Johnsson
Hinostroza had 16 goals and 39 points about five years ago for the Coyotes. He's a speedy depth player who can pass.
Hinostroza is a competent 4th line player on a reasonable 4th line contract.
Andreas Johnsson is the former Maple Leaf who at one point looked like he was going to be a solid middle six winger in his career. His second season in the league he had 20 goals and 43 points. He became a cap casualty and was traded to New Jersey where he's yet to quite find that gear again. He did have a 35 point year. It came with only 13 goals. Last year he only played in 13 games with 3 points. Dubas is extending a lifeline in the hopes of finding that 40ish point player again.
The strategy is clear. Acquire as many NHL veterans on the cheap who have flashed success in various past seasons. The more darts to throw the better odds of the team finding guys who stick. While I remain skeptical of the third line situation I am confident they will ice a very competent 4th line. Something the team lacked last season.
