Penguins play like statues, but at least not like that one

The good news, the Penguins did exactly what they should have to the lowly Anaheim Ducks. They put up 59 shots in a 6-3 win. Even got some depth scoring from Jeff Carter, Kasperi Kapanen, and Pierre-Olivier Joseph. The bad news, whatever last night was. The Los Angeles Kings blew out the Penguins 6-0 on Saturday night fueled by Adrian Kempe’s four consecutive goals. Casey Desmith was pulled and both goalies combined to stop 25 out of 31 shots.

This was a missed opportunity for the Penguins as the Islanders lost in overtime earlier in the day and the Buffalo Sabres were also blown out by the Calagry Flames. Both teams are chasing the Penguins for a playoff berth. The Penguins are one point ahead of the Islanders with four games in hand. they are five points up on Buffalo, but the Sabres have a game in hand. The Florida Panthers are also in the mix three points behind the Penguins with the Penguins having played three fewer games.

As bad as the Penguins performance against the Kings was it wasn’t the worst performance of the night. Last night was Dustin Brown night. The Kings celebrating their two-time Cup winning captain wasn’t inherently the issue. They are certainly well within their rights to celebrate the most successful era of their franchise. The Kings retired his number which to me is stretching things given Brown wasn’t exactly a star player at any point of his .55 points per game career. Ok fine, but then I saw he was getting a statue?! We are talking about Los Angeles here. Wayne Gretzky, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... Dustin Brown. That’s wild to me. It would be like putting up a Chris Kunitz statue.

Now getting a statue is an incredible honor. One of the highest honors a team can give a former player. However, if the statue is done in such a horrible way and butchers your likeness so bad, is there a point where you wish they hadn’t done it in the first place? I think this statue might qualify. I give you the Alexander Ovechk... I mean Dustin Brown statue

Yikes.

The Penguins may have played like statues last night, but at least they don’t look like the new one standing outside crypto.com Arena, woof.
