Penguins deny permission to talk to Mike Sullivan

Player moves are very rare during the Stanley Cup Playoffs so the attention turns to other avenues for the teams no longer in the mix. Coaching is certainly one of those areas and the Penguins are in the news for it, again. This time it isn’t the Penguins AHL situation. It has to do with Mike Sullivan’s availability, or should I say, lack thereof.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have not been asked for permission, nor have they granted permission, for the New Jersey Devils to speak to head coach Mike Sullivan, Penguins president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas said Tuesday.

“There have been no requests and no permissions granted,” Dubas said in a text message to The Athletic.

A Devils source said New Jersey would have interest in Sullivan if he wasn’t under contract with the Penguins.

This isn’t much of a change as far as I can see. Mike Sullivan is still entrenched with the team and there is nothing pointing to a change in his coaching status heading into the upcoming season. It shouldn’t come as a surprise other teams would be interested in him becoming their head coach. Given how recycled NHL coaches are one with a back to back Cup on his resume sticks out like a sore thumb.

For some this non-change in status merited a picture of a bridge and the spamming of an overused eye emoji. For those who have been paying attention, it is just Tuesday.
