Blue Jackets to Sign Justin Scott |

The Jackets have dipped back into the CHL overage market, this time signing Justin Scott, a centre with the Barrie Colts.
I've seen Scott play a few times, and he wasn’t someone who really stood out. He put up 65 points in 67 games, which isn't impressive for a 20 year old in the CHL. Scott has some size to him listed at 6’1 195, and he uses that size well on the cycle and getting to the front of the net. As I discussed in the
piece on Jordan Maletta, 20 year olds should be dominating the OHL. They are the bigger and stronger than many of their peers.
Scott was signed because of the great playoffs he's having with the Colts. In 11 games he has scored 14 goals, including a third period game seven hat-trick to beat Mississauga in the first round. He's playing very well right now, but we have to keep in mind the sample size. He’s clearly benefiting from great shooting luck. In just 11 games he's halfway to his season goal total, which is simply not sustainable.
As for projecting Scott, fellow HockeyBuzz writer Todd Cordell sums it up very well.
I've said before I like the thought process of going after these players. I just don’t think the Jackets are targeting the right players. You need to be going after players who project as more than depth players. It’s very easy to get NHL depth players; you don’t need to develop them.
I've written in the past about players I would target. You can find that list
here.
As for Scott’s future, the Colts just swept their second round series and are off to the Eastern Conference Finals where they will face off against Maletta, Blake Siebenaler and the Niagara Ice Dogs. If the Colts lose that series I would imagine Scott will suit up for the Lake Erie Monsters.
