The Blue Jackets have re-signed defencemen David Savard to a 5 year contract worth 4.25M per season. Nick Kypros had the scoop first.

This shows a long term commitment by both the player and the team. For Savard, who was set to be a restricted free agent after this season, he shows he is committed to the team and what they are trying to build. Savard gave up two RFA years and three UFA years with the deal. For the team this shows how much they value Savard and what he means to this team going forward. It’s no secret they are big fans of his, he was mentioned as an untouchable player at last year’s trade deadline.

If Savard has a breakout year like the front office expects this deal could look like a steal going forward. The risk of course is if he doesn’t improve at which point the deal wouldn’t look great, but it wouldn’t be crippling to the franchise.

Savard gets a lot of ice time but hasn’t shown the production yet. If he could get away from Jack Johnson and play more with perhaps Ryan Murray I think his numbers would look a lot better.

The team putting a lot of faith into Savard this season to help carry the load and be an anchor defensively. Hopefully he can have the breakout season the front office expects and we can talk about this deal as one of the best on the team.
