With the Blue Jackets set to take on the Canadiens tonight in Montreal, here’s the latest news surrounding the team.

Markus Hannikainen out Two Months

Hannikainen was hurt in his NHL debut Saturday against St Louis. We found out yesterday that he suffered a shoulder injury and will about for two months.

This is really unfortunate for Hannikainen as he was playing really well. As an undrafted free agent pick up, he's someone who I root for and want to see succeed. Not that I don’t want to see the first rounder’s succeed, but there is always that sort of underdog story with these kinds of players. This is one of the reasons I was such a big fan of Dante Salituro.

These types of players are found money for an NHL team; they get them for essentially nothing. Just money and a contract spot. Every year there are so many of these types of players who are worth a shot, and I can’t help but to root for them.

Here’s hoping Hannikainen has a smooth recovery and can back on the ice and pick up right where he left off.

Michael Chaput Called Up

The Hannikainen injury meant someone had to be called up to give the team some forward depth. Michael Chaput was that guy. This will be his second stint with the team; he has yet to play a game.

I’d imagine he would have been the called up anyway but it was nice of the team to bring him up for the game in Montreal as Chaput is from the area. He is from Ile Bizard which is a small island right outside of Montreal. He unfortunately won’t be playing in the game tonight but still this a nice little homecoming for him.

Hockey Canada Announces World Junior Camp Invites

Hockey Canada announced the 30 players they have invited to selection camp this morning. Blue Jackets prospect Olivier LeBlanc was not among those invited. LeBlanc was invited to the summer camp and played in the Canada-Russia Series in mid-November. This marks the first time Columbus has not had at least one prospect play on Team Canada’s World Junior Team since 2010.

Not to worry the Jackets could have up to four players on Team USA. Sonny Milano, Zach Werenski and Ryan Collins are all eligible to return after playing on last year’s team. Paul Bittner has an outside shot at the team as well.
