In 3 days on the ice, nothing has changed on the Canadiens’ lines. Julien might say that we shouldn’t read too much into it and that it’s still early but in a shorten camp with no exhibition games, it’s anything but early. For the last 2 days the power play units have looked like this:
PP1
Weber-Petry-Toffoli-Suzuki-Drouin
Note: the rationale behind Weber and Petry being on the same power play is that this way, Weber will be able to go down low in the Ovechkin spot, so to speak, so that he can unleash his shot without worrying about being the last line of defense. As for Toffoli, he’s practicing in the bumper. Drouin is down low, Suzuki on the wall and Petry up top.

Romanov-Tatar-Gallagher-Anderson-Kotkaniemi
Note: on the first day, Mete was subbing in for Romanov on this one, but not today. Perry is subbing in for Anderson at times. Romanov is up top, Kotkaniemi is on the right half wall, Anderson in front, Tatar down low and Gallagher in the bumper.
Today, the first guy on the ice was Alexander Romanov and he was also the last guy to leave the ice and he’s also putting in extra time in the gym. All the players who have been asked about him are impressed with his work ethic and how strong he is. Perry’s arrival yesterday has also meant that Jordan Weal is now practicing with group B.
Tomorrow see the Habs hold their first scrimmage, it will be held at 11:00 AM in Brossard. It’s unclear so far if it will be broadcasted anywhere, I’m hoping there is a livestream on the team’s Twitter feed.
Meanwhile, at the World Junior Championships, team USA completely dominated the gold medal game and won 2-0. Canada, who had scored 41 goals in its first 6 games just couldn’t save Spencer Knight even though they shot 34 times and they had no answer to the pressure American skaters were putting on them when they had the puck. There wasn’t much to report on the Habs’ prospects front, neither found their way on the scoresheet or were particularly remarkable. This was Cole Caufield’s last game with the American team and he definitely got the ending he wanted…as for Kaiden Guhle, you can bet he’ll be back next year, and he’ll be looking to get the gold medal.

Julien nous a peut-être dit de ne pas tirer de conclusion hâtive en début de camp, mais avec un camp si cour et sans match d’exhibition, il n’est pas vraiment tôt. Pour les deux derniers jours, les unités de l’attaque massive était les suivantes :

Weber-Petry-Toffoli-Suzuki-Drouin
Note: La raison pour laquelle Weber et Petry sont sur la même unité est pour permettre à Weber de s’avancer vers le point de mise au jeu en territoire adverse, dans le bureau d’Ovechkin comme on pourrait dire, afin de pouvoir laisser aller ses boulets de canon sans s’inquiéter d’être la dernière ligne de défense. Quant à Toffoli, il se retrouve dans le rôle du “bumper”, Drouin est dans le bas de la zone, Suzuki près de la bande et Petry à la ligne bleue.

Romanov-Tatar-Gallagher-Anderson-Kotkaniemi
Note: la première journée, Mete remplaçait Romanov sur certaines répétitions, mais ce n’était pas le cas aujourd’hui. Quant à Corey Perry, il prend la place d’Anderson de temps à autre. Romanov se tient à la ligne bleue, Kotkaniemi est près de la bande à droite, Anderson devant le filet, Tatar dans le bas de la zone et Gallagher dans le rôle du « bumper ».
Aujourd’hui, le premier joueur sur la glace était Alexander Romanov et il était également le dernier à la quitter en plus de faire du surtemps dans le gymnase. Tous les joueurs interrogés sur le jeune défenseur sont impressionnés par l’éthique de travail du jeune défenseur et par sa force. L’arrivée de Perry hier a relégué Jordan Weal au groupe B.
Demain les Canadiens tiendront leur premier match simulé à Brossard à 11:00 AM. Nous n’avons pas encore de confirmation à savoir si ce sera diffusé quelque part, mais je m’attends bien à une diffusion en direct sur la page Twitter de l’équipe.
Pendant ce temps, au Championnat Mondial Junior, les États-Unis ont dominé le match de la médaille d’or et l’ont emporté 2-0 sur le Canada. Les Canadiens avaient marqué 41 buts dans leurs 6 matchs précédents mais ils n’ont pas réussi à déjouer Spencer Knight malgré un barrage de 34 lancers et ils n’avaient pas de réponse à la pression que les patineurs américains mettaient sur eux à chaque fois qu’ils étaient en possession de la rondelle. Il n’y a pas grand-chose à dire sur la performance des 2 espoirs du CH, ils ne se sont pas inscrits à la marque et n’ont rien fait de particulièrement remarquable. Ce match était le dernier de Cole Caufield avec l’équipe nationale junior américaine et il n’aurait pas pu espérer un meilleur dénouement…Quant à Guhle, vous pouvez parier qu’il sera de retour l’an prochain et qu’il visera la médaille d’or.
