It’s been a whirlwind of a year for the Montreal Canadiens and now that the dust as settled on the season that saw them go from Stanley Cup finalist to the last place of the standings, it’s time to take stock, analyze and move forward and that’s exactly what Gorton and Kent Hughes are doing. During the 40 odd minutes that his chat lasted with Bob McCown and John Shannon, Gorton covered many topics but a couple of them really caught my attention.
Firstly, on the rebuild, Gorton admits that there is a lot of work still to be done but stated that this team has some good character guys that did make it to the Stanley Cup final so there is no need to just tear everything down. That’s not to say that there won’t be any more changes, but if you expected the Habs of get rid of every veteran on the roster, you’ll be disappointed. However, he does mention that they still need to add some young talent, perhaps a way to say that this upcoming season could also be challenging but that it should allow Montreal to stock up again at the draft. The Canadiens’ VP added that there are still a few things they’d like to get done before the start of the season, but he doesn’t know if they’ll come to fruition. If they don’t though, he says he’s comfortable with the roster, citing the fact that they’ve got 15-16 good forwards signed that they could work with, a combination of vets and young players. The way he spoke, I believe the Habs are mainly interested in tinkering with their blue line, the right side is far from ideal right now and someone who’s natural side it is would be a good addition.
Secondly, on the French speaking debate, the man in charge says that he understands the need to have some French speaking players but that he doesn’t feel compelled to had players from la belle province just for the sake of adding them. He said that they had some last year and that they still have David Savard and resigned Samuel Montembeault, interestingly, he didn’t mention Jonathan Drouin at this point, could have just forgotten or it could just be that the winger doesn’t really have a big role in the Canadiens’ plans.
Finally, on Carey Price, Gorton said that he’ll be in town next month to meet with the team doctors and that he’s aware of the importance the goaltender has had in the Canadiens’ history and that “they’ll see what Carey wants to do”. Clearly, there’s no clarity on his status right now and his destiny really is in his own hands. The doctors can give their opinion, but it will be up to Price to decide whether he goes on or not and the Canadiens will respect his decision. He spoke about not only his own hiring but also about Kent Hughes’ and Marty St-Louis’, about drafting Slafkovsky first overall and that reported stare down.
Ce fut une saison de fou pour les Canadiens de Montréal et maintenant que la poussière est retombée sur une campagne qui les a vu passer de finalistes de la Coupe Stanley à bons derniers au classement, l’heure est aux évaluations et aux analyses et c’est exactement ce que Kent Hughes et Jeff Gorton font. Pendant les quelques 40 minutes que durent son apparition sur le balado avec Bob McCown et John Shannon, Gorton a couvert plusieurs sujets mais quelques-uns ont particulièrement attiré mon attention.
Premièrement, sur le sujet de la reconstruction, Gorton admet qu’il y a encore beaucoup de travail à faire mais il avance tout de même qu’il y a plusieurs bons joueurs de caractère dans sa formation qui se sont quand même rendu en finale de la Coupe et qu’il n’a pas besoin de faire table rase. Cela ne veut pas dire pour autant que les changements sont terminés, mais si vous vous attendiez à voir le CH se débarrasser de tous ses vétérans, vous serez déçu. Il mentionne cependant que le club doit encore ajouter de bons jeunes talents, c’est peut-être là une façon de dire que la prochaine saison pourrait être difficile mais qu’elle permettra au CH de continuer à remplir son armoire d’espoirs l’an prochain. Il a également affirmé qu’il y a encore quelques choses qu’ils aimeraient faire d’ici le début de la saison, mais qu’il ne sait pas si cela se fera. S’ils n’y parviennent pas, il se dit confortable avec l’alignement, ils ont 15-16 bons avants avec qui ils pourront travailler, une combinaison de vétérans et de jeunes. De la façon dont il s’exprime, j’ai bien l’impression que c’est à la ligne bleue qu’il aimerait faire des ajustements, mettons que le côté droit de la brigade défensive est loin d’être idéal présentement et qu’un joueur dont c’est le côté naturel ne serait pas un luxe.
Deuxièmement, sur le fameux débat quant aux joueurs parlant en français, il dit comprendre le besoin d’avoir des joueurs qui parle français mais il ne se sent pas forcé d’en ajouter simplement pour cette raison. Il dit qu’ils en avaient l’an passé et qu’ils ont toujours David Savard en plus d’avoir resigner Samuel Montembeault. Fait intéressant, il ne mentionne pas Jonathan Drouin dans sa réponse, il ne s’agit peut-être que d’un oubli, ou c’est un indice que l’ailier ne figure pas vraiment dans les plans futurs de l’organisation.
Finalement, à propos de Carey Price, celui-ci sera en ville le mois prochain et rencontrera les Médecins de l’équipe. Gorton se dit conscient de l’importance de Price dans l’histoire du CH et que “nous verrons ce que Carey veut faire”. Clairement, rien n’est encore limpide quant à l’état de santé du gardien et sa destinée est fermement entre ses mains. Les docteurs peuvent donner leur opinion, mais il appartiendra à Price de décider s’il part ou non et le club respectera sa décision.
