There were a few culprits in the Hawks 3-1 loss in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. And you have to tip your cap to the Kings for coming out and seizing the momentum.

But a lot of Hawks battled heroically tonight: Corey Crawford, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Patrick Sharp, Bryan Bickell and a few others. Unfortunately, one of the Hawks's two highest paid players was yet again a complete rumor when the going got rough.

Patrick Kane was -1, with 2 shots. Waving at pucks, failing to engage, a few cutesie drop passes, a total non-factor along the wall, overhandling the puck when a shot was absolutely the right play. Completely unacceptable from a player who is paid to be one of your leaders and top performers.

But he wasn't alone.

Dave Bolland—the playoff "legend"—also, missing in action.

Viktor Stalberg. Detroit, San Jose et al, you sure you want this guy?

But Kane makes more than those last two players combined. Much more.

I'm sure the "Kanerphiles" will erupt in indignation. Or I'll get the usual "he's not that kind of player." Here's the problem: it's that kind of game. They'll say I'm "picking"on him. Sorry, you need more effort—period—from your top players. The Hawks got it from all the other core guys. And many non-core guys. One passenger is too many. A highly paid passenger is a problem.

On a positive note, after going down 2-0, Bickell had the game on his stick with under two minutes left. Jonathan Quick made a great save. But the Hawks had a lot of pressure late, and pretty much won the third period after a miserable first 19:27 of the second—capped by Bickell's huge goal.

So the Kings are back in the series. And to their credit. What Game 3 should teach the Hawks is they will lose this series—lose it, season over—if they have passengers. Especially if said passengers are their "superstars."

The Kings pretty much don't. Hence, they won. And the series is 2-1.

All for now,

JJ
