Steve Yzerman is quietly working around the clock

After last night’s 5-1 loss against the New York Rangers, it was clear something needed to change. What caught many by surprise what Steve Yzerman’s 3rd trade of the young season. Robby Fabbri in exchange for Jacob DeLaRose. Another first round pick from 2014 that hasn’t panned out is heading to Motown. DeLaRose is a good depth grinder. St. Louis will be an exciting change of scenery. Robby Fabbri was drafted to score, something Detroit desperately needs.

In just over a week Yzerman has brought in Perlini and Fabbri and is making changes that are low risk and have the potential to make the team better. Fabbri had been a teammate of Tyler Bertuzzi , and Perlini had been a teammate of Dylan Larkin. Those two links are more interesting than the draft selections.

So far, the only offensive line with consistent chemistry is Larkin/Bertuzzi/Mantha. Steve Yzerman understands player relationships and chemistry. His way of working quietly and executing is new and very different for this market. It is hard to imagine how many irons this GM has in the fire. Yzerman made a recent trip to Finland and quietly scouted Jesse Pujuljarvi. It may not amount to anything, but it is impressive how much Yzerman is involved in scouting.

Scotty Bowman understood pieces and placement. He found the right place for Holmstrom and Tomas made a career out of it. Kris Draper found new life as part of a $1 deal. The 2002 “all star” Red Wings squad saw a balanced use of hall of fame players in an exciting way. Brett Hull could mentor Pavel Datsyuk, Luc Robitaille was relegated to 4th line minutes but made it work. It is clear that this unorthodox view of usages impacted Steve Yzerman greatly.

It seems that the front office is helping tweak the landscape without sacrificing. Small moves and a search for the best fits. Should a large move be on the horizon? It seems clear that anything that happens will be kept under wraps until all the pieces are in place.

It should inspire confidence for Detroit fans that the new GM is constantly working. What seemed like a wall of silence was just silent running. Nothing is going unnoticed by the front office, and it seems that Yzerman is going to continue to try and provide options and tweaks to help the young core of this team develop without sacrificing the development of the prospects in Grand Rapids. It seems to be a sound theory, only time will tell if the application is effective.
