NHL rumors ran a piece that has 6 different teams inquiring about Chycrun as the Senators try to decide what to do.

I’ve stated (along with a few of you) how much the 25 year old Dman would be a welcome addition. However, the teams listed are: Toronto, Edmonton, Islanders, New Jersey, Minnesota and of course Detroit. Looking at that list, it feels like a much more difficult task. Toronto HAS to do something to the blue line. Those two raises aren’t going to make life easier capwise next year. Edmonton desperately wants to have more success for CMD. NYI is actively changing and Minnesota is a wild card. Either way, there are clubs that will pay for not just this year but next year to have Chycrun on the team. A bidding war puts this out of reach quickly but some of those teams will need salary help that could grab a draft pick. Detroit may end up being considered as a 3rd party team.

So, last night’s game was another one where LCA was jumping. Chants for Lion’s players, Honolulu blue everywhere, plus a big third period win and it felt like something was going to rattle loose. It did, in the form of an un-boiled (read the rule man) octopus on the ice. The rules used to be 1- boil it to make it rubbery and not as slimy. 2 - the smuggler keeps it in a bag from down under. As much fun as it is for the fans, it’s still kind of gross. Hopefully it was a bag that was pine scented.

After everything was finished, an interesting questions was sent Mickey Redmond’s way during the post game. “Will you be disappointed if this team doesn’t make the playoffs”. After some back and forth and joking, “yes” was the answer. That was a tough time to pose the question. It’s akin to being at a rock concert and seeing someone propose out of the blue (no ring) and the next day the awkwardness sets in.

Well, this team is performing at a new level. The amount of credit that needs to go Lyon’s way is immense. However, Forwards backchecking and helping in their own zone has been huge. Plays by Seider, Walman and even Gostisbehere (wasn’t expecting a ton defensively there) make the highlight reels. Moritz is playing like he’s been there longer than he has. Quiet plays, blocking pucks in a way that allows him to quickly re engage. Walman can do it all. First 10 goal scoring Dman since we had Mike Green for a minute.

Hockey is a bizarre sports equivalent to simultaneously being a retirement portfolio and day trading. One you just watch and make occasional adjustments as it matures. The other is a minute by minute thrill ride that could end in bakruptcy. In the moment, it definitely feels like this team is poised to get someone fired by “over performing expectations”. On the other hand, there’s still a nice chunk of games ahead. Things can still turn on a dime and Husso’s return may cause a dilemma for the coaching staff. (An unnecessary one, but I digress).

Until the positions are locked, or a team goes on a slide and creates an insurmountable gap between the wild card and the outside spots it’s going to be a game to game stress fest. The general attitude of the team is the best it’s been during the “rebuild”. Players want to be there and find a way to contribute. The month of February will make decisions for this and many other clubs. We’ll see whether Caesar (even Little Caesar) has a thumbs up or thumbs down at the deadline.
