Owen Beck
By Ryan Snow

Today I want to talk about Owen Beck. I really liked the small sample we saw this season and below I will elaborate why.

The strengths which I saw were his vision, hands and tenacity. Overall, I find he has good awareness of what is going on and he was able to push the play with and without the puck. Also, he has good puck skills and can dangle his way into creating space to be able to make the appropriate play. Furthermore, he works hard on the board and I find it fits well with the established system. While he was not rewarded with a lot of points, I do find he was able to create offense and was often unlucky with goaltenders making nieces saves.

Where he needs work is his timing. The NHL is a fast league and he got caught a few times cutting into the middle with the puck, but this is a very normal thing that every NHL player goes through in their first seasons in the league so it is not worrisome. He needs to use vall of his strengths to put up more points consistently, but this will come with more ice time and becoming accustomed to the speed of the NHL

A reader posted this on the forum in my last post on the Habs:

“convert Owen Beck to the wing even though his Face Offs are so good if you have to but hes the perfect 4th liner to add.”

I agree that having Beck on the wing is the best option. Not that he can’t be an NHL center, but in order to get him the ice time he deserves, putting him on the wing is the best option. I would love to see him get 11-14 minutes per game because I really do believe he will be a well rounded player and benefit from the Habs system.

Thank you for reading and I encourage you all to comment on the forum as your ideas are always interesting and thought provoking. Habs fans are always fun! All hockey fans actually. I still can’t post due to tech issues, but going forward I will pick a couple of comments to respond to in my articles and encourage discussion!
