So it begins, the breakdown and reconstruct of a Devils team that severely lacked scoring depth in 2024-25. However it’s the $3.15m in cap space that comes back as the cornerstone of this deal.
With approximately $14m in open cap space as of today, the Devils(who are not done selling off poor contracts) are set up nicely for a bottom six renaissance. Shedding the contracts of Dougie Hamilton, 3 years left at $9m, and Ondrej Palat, 2 years left at $6m, could really put NJ in great shape for a 2025 UFA shopping spree. In order to do so the Devils may have to get creative, something Fitzgerald will have no problem doing. Expect a very active draft day and free agency period this summer, and a bigger, stronger, better Devils team in the fall.
