Peter Deboer has been fired by Dallas. This is a pretty shocking development, because this is one of the most successful coaches in history, and it’s hard to imagine a coach of his magnitude being released almost entirely based on a move that he made in the conference finals.
Many in Dallas, of course, I’ve been complaining about his decision to pull Jake Oettinger after giving up the first two goals in Game Seven of the conference finals.
It’s hard to believe GM Jim Nill would make such a move based on one strategic incident. My sources tell me that there’s a lot more to do with this, and what has been more concerning is the players’ reaction since the incident and Peter’s insistence that he wasn’t going to discuss a single move. We discussed this yesterday on the podcast: how he hasn’t even talked yet to Jake Oettinger…. which feels kind of unfathomable in this day and age. In the past, coaches would definitely not discuss these kinds of things with their players. The players we just have to accept it and move on. The new breed of players, though, are much more communicative and much smarter about the game in general and often do deserve explanations…..

We have seen a slurry of coaches hired over the last month, so I thought I’d put together a list of the current coaches in the NHL how long they’ve been there when they were hired, etc. I do believe that Peter will be on this list by the beginning of the season. The question is where? I’ve highlighted some possibilities….
