The Post-Marner Era: Leafs Eye Local Boy to Revamp Roster
With Mitch Marner's expected departure and limited free-agent options, the Toronto Maple Leafs will likely adopt an "offense by committee" approach to replace his scoring. This means General Manager Brad Treliving and Head Coach Craig Berube will need to work together to build a deeper offensive lineup that still prioritizes defensive responsibility.
As free agency approaches on July 1st, rumors are swirling, and the Maple Leafs have already been linked to Toronto native Andrew Mangiapane. Treliving is very familiar with Mangiapane, having drafted him during his time as GM of the Calgary Flames. Mangiapane had his best season under Treliving, scoring 35 goals and 20 assists in the 2021-22 season.
Last season with the Washington Capitals, Mangiapane notched 14 goals and 14 assists. More importantly for the Leafs, he demonstrated a strong defensive impact, creating 152 more scoring chances than he allowed. In over 1050 minutes of ice time, Mangiapane was on the ice for only 33 goals against.
Mangiapane offers the Leafs a versatile option who can contribute on both the power play and penalty kill. He brings a high hockey IQ, a strong work ethic, and a physical edge despite his size. It's clear that players like Mangiapane fit the mold that Berube is looking for.
Given his reported asking price of $4,000,000, the Maple Leafs will need to be strategic with their remaining roster spots. However, it wouldn't be a surprise to see this energetic winger return home on July 1st. With the right opportunity, don't be shocked if Mangiapane regains some of his offensive touch and crosses the 20-goal mark for the second time in his career next season.
