From Enemy to Ally: The Case for Brad Marchand in Toronto
The Maple Leafs have repeatedly tried, and failed, to find the right mentor for their young core. From Patrick Marleau and Jason Spezza to Joe Thornton and Nick Foligno, the team has consistently sought veteran leadership. However, none of these voices could get the Leafs over the hump, and they all have one thing in common: not one of them had ever lifted the Stanley Cup.
It seems the Leafs are once again searching for veteran leadership, but this time they appear to be targeting a proven winner. According to multiple insiders, should he remain unsigned by July 1st, the Leafs' top target will be none other than Brad Marchand. Throughout his career, Marchand has been a notorious "Leaf Killer," consistently giving the team headaches.
Today, insider Darren Dreger revealed how the Maple Leafs envision Marchand fitting in and the role he would play. According to Dreger, the Leafs' management views Marchand as the perfect complementary piece on the top line with Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. This move would shift William Nylander to the second line, where he would be expected to drive his own line.
When the question of Marchand's potential interest in playing for Toronto arises, the short answer is yes. What makes the opportunity so enticing? It would be the chance to play for the new Maple Leafs Head Coach, Craig Berube. If Marchand hits the open market, the Leafs won't be the only team lining up to sign him.
In my opinion, if the Leafs can create the necessary cap space, they could afford to spend on a player like Marchand. However, thrusting him into a top-line role seems contrary to where he has found success in Florida. It will be a very interesting lead-up to free agency as the Panthers look to lock down their Marchand, but the clock is ticking.
