Guerin: Wild Will Name Captain Before Season

So Bill Guerin says that the Wild will name a new captain to replace Mikko Koivu, who was not resigned and is now in Columbus. Koivu is the only full time captain in Wild team history, so seeing the "C" on another Wild sweaters will take some getting used to for sure.

Now who will that be is another story in itself. There are the natural choices of Ryan Suter and Zach Parise or possibly even Jared Spurgeon all are worthy and leaders absolutely.

The natural question is that if the team is truly turning the page and making the transition away from the past that saw them show signs of compete in the regular season only to sent home early when the post season began. That said, naming one of the aforementioned long time Wild veterans as the captain does not change the hierarchy in the locker room very much if at all.

The NHL is a young man's game and the Wild have taken far too long to acknowledge this, as they have continually iced a veteran laden lineup in hopes that would be enough to take the team to a higher compete level. We have painfully seen the results and if one of the veterans Suter, Parise, or Spurgeon are named captain is it more of the same?

Marcus Foligno is another name to be considered, but is the big winger part of the Wild's long term plan beyond the upcoming 2021 season?

Wishing all a happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
