Training Camp Report: Day 5

On the fifth day of training camp at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, the defense pairs stayed the same as on Wednesday as did the primary groups of forwards. Morgan Frost spent the entire practice and scrimmage on left wing rather than splitting center/wing reps. Wade Allison took part in the practice but was not on the ice for the scrimmage. The third portion of the day, for the first time was devoted to special teams.

SCRIMMAGE SYNPOSIS

Team Orange won the scrimmage, 2-1, on a Travis Konecny goal after he took the puck away from Travis Sanheim and then a nice backhanded goal from below the right circle by Kevin Hayes after a pass from Giroux. In between the Orange goals, a Robert Hägg shot appeared to deflected in off Andy Andreoff.

One of the most encouraging sequences of the day: Frost outworked Mark Friedman on the side boards and taken passed to Connor Bunnaman for a point-blank scoring chance that Bunnaman tucked just wide of the net. Wisdom skated right wing on the line, continuing to forecheck very effectively. Wisdom did have a couple of turnovers where he put pucks out in front directly into the defense, but overall played well.

Friday's scrimmage was not nearly as physical as the one on Wednesday. However, there were also some very nice plays made, especially on the passing end.

The ice may have been a little rough today because several players fell down around the same in the far-side zone. Egor Zamula went down twice.

SPECIAL TEAQMS SEGMENT

There was no second half to Friday's scrimmage. Instead, players convened on the Phantoms Rink for a special teams practice. The units were as follows for the first rep.

PP1: Provorov, Giroux, Hayes, Couturier, Konecny
PP2: Farabee, Gustafsson, JVR, Patrick, Voracek

On subsequent second unit reps. Frost and then Sanheim got one rep apiece in place of Farabee. Sanheim also took a penalty killing rep. On the first unit, Shayne Gostisbehere rotated on for Provorov. The rest of the skaters on both units stayed the same.

Unit 1 was buzzing as the reps progressed with Konecny scoring two goals (deflection goal, finishing end of a tic-tac-toe connection with the primary assist to Couturier and the secondary to Giroux). The second unit didn't get much going.

There were also a pair of shorthanded breakaways. Scott Laughton was denied by Carter Hart's glove on a backhander against PP1. Later, Oskar Lindblom scored over Elliott with the second unit on the ice. As expected, Laughton and Michael Raffl were a regular forward pairing on the PK side and Lindblom also took regular reps.
