Quick Hits: June 3, 2024
1) Mondays with Meltzer: On this week's Monday edition of the Flyers Daily podcast, host Jason Myrtetus and I discuss the variety of ways the playoff teams have been built -- there isn't just one "right" way -- and what we can learn from this in regard to the next steps in the Flyers' rebuild. We also look back to 2012 and provide context to all the circumstances that led to the Sergei Bobrovsky trade. In the final segment, we talk about how we'd define progress in the 2024-25 season.
2) On Sunday, the Saginaw Spirit nipped the OHL champion London Knights, 4-3, to win the 2024 Memorial Cup championship. London recovered from a 3-0 deficit before Saginaw's Josh Bloom scored with 22 seconds left in regulation to win the championship for the tournament hosts. Flyers defense prospect Oliver Bonk generated a pair of assists in a losing cause in the championship game. Flyers wing prospect Denver Barkey did not record a point.
3) Today in Flyers History: June 3
1968: The Flyers claim unprotected 42-year-old future Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Allan Stanley from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the off-season "reverse draft". Stanley finishes his prolific 1,244-game NHL career with one season in Philadelphia. Stanley, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 87, remains the oldest player to suit up in an NHL game for the Flyers.
1995: In Game 1 of the 1995 Eastern Conference Final, the Flyers look sluggish after a week-long break following their four-game sweep of the New York Rangers in the second round of the playoffs. The New Jersey Devils skate off with a 4-1 win at the Spectrum and hold the Flyers to just 21 shots for the game. Bill Guerin scores twice for the Devils. Craig MacTavish breaks up Martin Brodeur's shutout bid late in the third period.
1997: In Game 2 of the 1997 Stanley Cup Final, the Flyers drop a 4-2 decision to the Detroit Red Wings. Philly recovered from an early 2-0 deficit on a pair of Rod Brind'Amour power play goals assisted by Janne Niinimaa. Unfortunately, after Ron Hextall was shaky in Game 1, Garth Snow fared little better in the second game at the CoreStates Center (now Wells Fargo Center). Brendan Shanahan scores twice for Detroit. Mike Vernon stops 26 of 28 shots to earn the win in net for the Red Wings.
2019: The Flyers trade a 2019 fifth-round pick to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for the negotiating rights for impending unrestricted free agent center Kevin Hayes. On June 19, the Flyers sign Hayes to a seven-year, $50 million contract.
4) June 3 Flyers Alumni birthday: Jason Akeson (1990).
5) Happy birthday wishes go out to current Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler. Born June 3, 1993, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Seeler turns 31 today.
