Quick Hits: October 8, 2023

1) On Saturday, the Flyers held their final on-ice practice of their 2023 training camp. The team will now depart for two days on a players-only bonding trip. The coaches will get together separately, and John Tortorella will meet with Danny Briere and Keith Jones before the Flyers file their opening-night roster with the National Hockey League on Monday. Practices resume on Tuesday as the team prepares in earnest for Thursday's opening-night game in Columbus.

2) At Saturday's hour-long practice, all players with the exception Carter Hart (under the weather, will return to practice on Tuesday) were present and accounted for. Rasmus Ristolainen, who was held out of Thursday's games for precautionary reasons with a minor injury, returned to practice. The line combinations and power play practice units were as follows:

Joel Farabee/ Tyson Foerster - Sean Couturier - Bobby Brink/Foerster
Scott Laughton - Noah Cates - Travis Konecny
Owen Tippett - Morgan Frost - Cam Atkinson
Nic Deslauriers - Ryan Poehling - Garnet Hathaway

Cam York - Travis Sanheim
Nick Seeler - Rasmus Ristolainen
Marc Staal - Sean Walker
Egor Zamula - Emil Andrae

Samuel Ersson
Felix Sandström

PP1: Brink, Atkinson, Couturier, Konecny, York
PP2: Farabee, Tippett, Frost, Cates, Sanheim

3) Wade Allison cleared waivers at 2 p.m. EDT on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers assigned him to the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The first order of business now for Allison will be to channel the understandable disappointment of not making the opening night NHL roster or being claimed off waivers by another club into motivation. He must report to the Phantoms with a positive frame of mind -and do everything he can to earn a quick return trip to the NHL as soon as an opportunity arises. I will reiterate what I said yesterday: In my opinion, Allison is an NHL-worthy hockey player. He just has to stay healthy for once and focus on taking care of the things that are within his control.

4) Phantoms: The Lehigh Valley Phantoms dropped to 0-2-0 on the preseason as they lost a 5-2 road decision against the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins on Saturday evening.

Forward Alex Kile and defenseman Adam Karashik scored for the Phantoms in a losing cause. Nolan Maier (11 saves on 15 shots) and Parker Gahagan (who stopped all nine shots he faced) split the goaltending chores for Lehigh Valley. Maier, who started the game, took the loss. Gahagar entered the game midway through the second period.

Jordan Frasca tallied twice for W-B/A, while Jagger Joshua, former Flyers draftee Jack St. Ivany, and Lukas Svejkovsky (who also scored in Tuesday's game) added a goal apiece. The Phantoms were 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

As with the preseason opener this past Tuesday, the Phantoms lineup on Saturday still consisted mostly of tryout players. The starting lineup for Ian Laperriere's squad:

29 Alexis Gendron- 24 Adam Brooks - 39 Kyle Olson
10 Evan Polei- 13 Brendan Furry- 25 Devon Paliani
15 Jordy Bellerive - 56 Jacob Gaucher - 48 Alex Kile
11 Ryan Chyzowski- 18 Shane Sellar - 14 Zayde Wisdom

8 Mason Millman - 3 Adam Karashik
4 Will Zmolek- 5 Ethan Samson
21 Darren Brady - 59 Koletrane Wilson

72 Nolan Maier
31 Parker Gahagen

5) The Phantoms will conclude their three-game preseason slate on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. EDT as they host the Hershey Bears at the PPL Center. For this game, look for most of the Phantoms' regulars in the lineup, including Elliot Desnoyers, Tanner Laczynski, Samu Tuomaala, Olle Lycksell, Cooper Marody, Rhett Gardner, veteran team captain Garrett Wilson, defensemen Ronnie Attard, Adam Ginning, Victor Mete and Louie Belpedio, as well as goaltender Cal Petersen.

Opening night of the Phantoms' regular season schedule is next Saturday (Oct. 14) as the Phantoms host the Cleveland Monsters. The next afternoon, the Belleville Senators will pay a visit to the PPL Center for a 1:05 p.m. ET matinee.

6) Prospect Roundup -- Notable performers from Saturday's games.

* KHL: Matvei Michkov was the lone bright spot for HC Sochi in an ugly 10-1 thrashing at the hands of Severstal Cherepovets. Michkov was in the thick of no fewer than five prime scoring chances for Sochi, including a breakaway that he slipped between the goalie's pads but which went off the post and stayed out. He also set up three prime chances for linemates that were non finished off. Michkov did collect a primary assist on a play where he attacked from the wing shot at the pads for a rebound slam dunk that gave Sochi a short-lived 1-0 lead in the first period. Despite the subsequent barrage of Severstal goals, Michkov was a respectable minus-one for the game in 14:37 of ice time.

* NCAA: Cutter Gauthier scored the winning goal in overtime as sixth-ranked Boston College defeated second-ranked Quinnipiac, 2-1, on the road on Saturday night. The game marked the BC freshman debuts of the Team USA national team trio of Ryan Leonard, Will Smith and Gabe Perrault. Perrault, Smith and Leonard primarily played as linemates but Gauthier saw penalty killing time together with Leonard, and they combined for the winning goal in the latter stages of overtime. Leonard gained the offensive zone and passed across the ice to Gauthier, who potted the winning goal from the right circle with a fast shot release. Gauthier, who finished with six shots on goal, was fairly quiet offensively for two periods but then dominated in the third period (especially in the final five minutes of regulation).

* OHL: Flyers 2023 third-round pick Denver Barkey had a stellar night in the London Knights' 4-1 victory against the Guelph Storm on Saturday night. London head coach Dale Hunter sent Barkey over the boards in virtually every key situation in the game, and he responded with two goals (even strength in the first period and empty-net late in the third) while setting up a Ruslan Gazizov goal that built a 3-1 led with just under six minutes left in regulation. Barkey deservedly was awarded first-star honors. Flyers 2023 first-round pick Oliver Bonk assisted on Barkey's first goal and was plus-two on the night.
