Quick Hits: August 6, 2023

1) On Saturday, the Flyers signed goaltender Samuel Ersson to a two-year-contract extension that will kick in for the 2024-25 season after he completes his entry-level deal in 2023-24. When the new deal starts, his AAV will increase from an $859,167 cap hit on a two-way contract ($70,000 in the AHL) to a $1.45 million cap hit on a one-way deal. Proactively locking in Ersson now is a clear vote of confidence in the player. Whether it has anything to do with Carter Hart's immediate and long-term situation is a matter of conjecture right now.

2) Sochi Hockey Open: SKA St. Petersburg finished the three-game preseason "Sochi Hockey Open" tournament in Sochi with a 1-1-1 record. On Saturday, SKA absorbed a 5-1 loss to Avangard Omsk. Top Flyers prospect Matvei Michkov scored the lone SKA goal, going to the net after a faceoff win and backhanding the puck home. On Sunday, SKA earned a 6-4 win over tournament host HC Sochi. Michkov's unofficial stat line against Sochi: 0G, 1A, 7-for-13 on faceoffs, regular PP2 time, ca. 20 seconds PK time, zero in-game SOG (1 missed shot) created four scoring chances, had an unsuccessful attempt in a practice shootout (pad save) after the game.

3) WJSS Summer Showcase: Cutter Gauthier finished the World Junior Summer Showcase with four goals, one assist and five points in four games. He played the first two games at center, the latter at left wing. Cole Knuble quietly had a strong week, splitting time between center and right wing, and collecting a two-goal game in the head-to-head game between USA White and USA Blue. Devin Kaplan had some solid moments in a bottom six role. He finished the exhibition tournament with one point (0g, 1a) in four games.

4) Today in Flyers History: August 6

* 1997: The Flyers promote pro scouting director Paul Holmgren to director of player personnel.
* 1998: The Flyers trade the right to unsigned goalie prospect Johan Hedberg to the San Jose Sharks for a 1999 seventh-round pick (Pavel Kasparik).
* 2020: In postseason round-robin competition, the undefeated Flyers skate to a 3-1 win over the Washington Capital in the bubble in Toronto. Scott Laughton leads the way with two goals and and assist while Travis Sanheim also tallies for the Flyers. Brian Elliott (16 saves on 17 shots) takes a shutout into the third period before Travis Boyd scores the lone Capitals goal.
