The San Jose Sharks picked up a shootout win over the Los Angeles Kings last night.

This was the third game in a row where the Sharks ended up in a shootout and they’ve now picked up five of a possible six points over their last three games.

The Sharks were by far the better team in the first period. Not only did they outshoot the Kings 12-4, they had the bulk of the chances and spent the majority of the period in Los Angeles’ zone. The Kings did bounce back and took control a bit in the second period, before a fairly even third period, where the Sharks finally evened it in the final minute. Logan Couture and Martin Jones came up big in the shootout to secure the win.

San Jose’s top two lines were both generating opportunities, though the bottom-six struggled a bit. I also continue to be impressed with how Ryan Donato is fitting in with the Sharks. Defensively, the Sharks weren’t bad and did limit quality chances on the rush, though there were some lapses.

If the Sharks are going to fight for a playoff spot, picking up wins against their Californian opponents will be key. Last night was a big win to keep San Jose in a competitive spot in the West.
