This piece will be another in my series of player profiles, where I’ll give some thoughts on the performance of a member of the New York Islanders this season. This article will focus on Ross Johnston.

Johnston usually has a similar impact on a game no matter what game it is, adding physicality and energy but not much offense. He didn’t get into a ton of games this year but when he did play, he averaged just eight minutes of ice time per game. His possession stats were also underwhelming at best, finishing with a corsi for percentage of just 42.2 per cent.

Based on their similar style of play, I could see Johnston potentially taking over for Matt Martin on the fourth line next season. One question that arises is whether Johnston is skilled enough to get regular playing time. However, with the Islanders also potentially needing to shed a contract or two for cap space and lose a player like Cal Clutterbuck or Leo Komarov in the process (something I’ll likely discuss in a future article), I’d imagine Johnston gets a shot at becoming a regular in the lineup next year.

The one thing I would say is that I hope Johnston doesn’t hold back a player like Kieffer Bellows from getting into the lineup, as Johnston should only get playing time if the fit is right (so really, only if it’s a spot on the fourth line). Regardless, with Martin likely gone and Johnston as a natural replacement, there’s a good chance we see Johnston in an increased role next season.

Here’s today’s poll (discussion and results will be posted in an article every Saturday):

Do you think Ross Johnston will be a regular in the lineup next season?
