Hurricanes are on a roll

At the beginning of the month I wrote an article on how tough the Carolina Hurricanes’ schedule was going to get. Since then, the Hurricanes have gone 6-1-1. It’s an impressive record that has them in third place in the very difficult Metropolitan Division.

Up front, the Hurricanes attack has certainly relied on their three stars, in Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen. The trio has combined for a ridiculous 28 points in those 8 games.

A big difference for the Hurricanes in that stretch has been secondary scoring. Warren Foegele, who had just 10 points in his first 27 games of the year, has six points in his last eight games, while Nino Niederreiter, who had the same point total through 27 games, has five points in his last eight games. Jordan Staal started even worse, with seven points in 27 games, now has six points in his last eight games. It’s a big boost to have those players producing, especially with Erik Haula out and Ryan Dzingel and Martin Necas going through rough patches offensively.

On defense, Dougie Hamilton is continuing his breakout season, while Jaccob Slavin is reaching new heights offensively as well. Perhaps the biggest advantage the Hurricanes have got in their last eight games though has been goaltending. Both Petr Mrazek and James Reimer have been at the top of their game as of late, with Mrazek posting a .929 SV% in that time, while Reimer has an even better .954 SV%.

The schedule isn’t going to get much easier for the Hurricanes, however right now, the team is at the top of their game.
