Hurricanes acquire Trocheck from Panthers

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Vincent Trocheck from the Florida Panthers, in exchange for Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark, Eetu Luostarinen and Chase Priskie.

This is a big move for the Hurricanes and it helps them significantly in terms of secondary scoring. Trocheck is a consistent 50-point scorer at minimum and to have him locked in for another two years at just $4.75 million per year is great.

In terms of what they gave up, Erik Haula would have commanded at least that much as a free agent and hasn’t been overly consistent this year. Lucas Wallmark was developing well but is likely always destined to be a bottom-six forward.

I really like that the Hurricanes gave up two prospects rather than draft picks as well. The fact is, the Hurricanes already have Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas, Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen who are going to be top forwards with the team for a long time to come. Now add Trocheck to that mix too. Luostarinen, while performing fine with Charlotte, wasn’t going to displace any of them and isn’t likely to become a top-six forward.

Dougie Hamilton and Brett Pesce are great on the right-side and likely aren’t going anywhere in the coming years. Priskie is a solid piece to give up but the Hurricanes have enough defense prospects to be able to move him without really facing any consequences. Suddenly, the Joey Keane for Julien Gauthier trade makes more sense.

It’s a pretty big package to give up but when you start to break down the deal, you see the value here. The Hurricanes get quality over quantity in this one.
