Fire up the trade Malkin rumor machine. Where does it land this time? Florida

Translation: EXCLUSIVE: A (good) source tells me that there are currently important negotiations between the Panthers and the Penguins. Huberdeau, Malkin and a first-round pick would be part of his discussions. To be continued.

Jonathan Huberdeau is a very good winger on a good contract. I have nothing negative to say about him as a player. Florida’s 13th overall pick isn’t going to help the Penguins much in their attempt to remain Stanley Cup contenders. It is very rare for a 13th overall pick to immediately become an impact player in the NHL. It isn’t reasonable to expect that so trading Malkin for a mystery box item as one of the main pieces reminds me of the mental gymnastics Peter Griffin uses.

Hey maybe the draft pick could be an Evgeni Malkin...

The hole at a #2C would be catastrophic. The Penguins don’t have assets to trade for one. That leaves dramatically overpaying in free agency for somebody like Matt Duchene. It also assumes the Penguins would successfully sign somebody like Matt Duchene. After Duchene there aren’t really any options. You are left with Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton who are destined to remain Sharks, or in Thornton’s case a retirement possibility. Kevin Hayes is off the board with Philadelphia trading a 5th round pick for his rights. It would be surprising if something didn’t get done between the two parties. Derick Brassard? Jason Spezza? I hear Dave Bolland’s contract is expiring this summer. It would be paying 8M+ for Duchene or bust and is he really going to provide better value than Evgeni Malkin? He isn’t going to age as well. Malkin is a generational talent. One of the best to every play the sport.

The problem with Malkin trade rumors remains the same. You don’t have Evgeni Malkin if you trade him.
