When Barry Trotz envisioned his return to Washington, with the Islanders, I highly doubt even in his wildest dreams he would’ve expected to be playing for first place on January 18th. But that is where we are as the red hot Islanders visit Washington tonight one point behind the Caps and Blue Jackets for bragging rights in the Metro.

The Islanders picked up another two points last night, which has become the norm lately, by beating the Devils. And again, it was how they did it that impressed me the most. Once again the Isles came at their opponent out of the gate flying. Before you can blink the Islanders had jumped out to a three goal lead.

This really does come down to coaching sometimes. It would’ve been very easy for the Islanders, who have played a ton of games in a short period of time, to be looking ahead to the big match up against the Capitals.

In this game though the scene was Nassau Coliseum. I need to get to a game in this arena again, because I just keep hearing the greatest stories about the atmosphere there.

Tonight will be a serious test for an Islanders team the mainstream media is still slow to comprehend...
