The Isles 6 game win streak fell last night to the Canes, but now at the official halfway point it may be time to take some stock of just how good this team is... It's hard to remember back to late September right now, but when the predictions came out this year, the Islanders were basically nowhere to be found...
Let's look back at the the predictions the "experts" put out there back then:
Vegas Book:
Over under points 82.5
The Hockey News:
Isles last in the Metro 83.5 points.
USA Today:
Isles in 7th in the Metro with 77 points.
TSN:
7th in the Metro
Washington Post:
7th in the Metro
the list goes on and on....
And yet...Currently the Isles sit in 4th, 1 point behind Columbus with a game in hand...And after 41 games, at the halfway mark, the Isles have 50 points...
Even I, who usually is 100 percent correct always...had the Isles in 6th place...but I did write:
The Isles are a like a caged animal with all sorts of anger. People keep dissing them, but a team cornered with this much offense (still) and Lou and Trotz at the helm will NOT be an easy two points. If they get ANY goaltending they could be a surprise playoff team.
Best Case: The Isles find their own identity and this great fan base gets back to the playoffs.
Do you think the Isles are the biggest surprise in the NHL?
What are your current expectations moving forward?
