Two Lopsided Wins Are Just 4 Points

What have you done for me lately?

That is often how we look at our teams. When things are going south it is doom and gloom fire the coach, fire sale the team, tank it for better draft picks and so on. When. The team is winning and strings together a couple of good games all is good and let's keep things as they are.

The Wild were in scenario one above a week ago and now fall more into category two with their latest lopsided win last night.

Let's try to keep everything in perspective though. The Wild finished last season in a position of " good, not great". That was the message from owner Craig Leipold when he decided not to renew GM, Chuck Fletcher's contract and hired Paul Fenton.

It was largely expected that Fenton would put his stamp on the team either with a deal on draft day or something significant heading into free agency.

The right oppressor never materialized and Fenton elected to stand pat with the Wild roster heading into the season. By all accounts that was a solid strategy because good not great is perfect for October and November NHL point collecting.

Now fast forward to today where the Wild sit just outside the top 8 in the Western Conference and riding a two-game win streak, outscoring their opponents 12-2 in the process. So all is right and they have a new line combination of Coyle, Parise, and Niederreiter that is on fire.

The word is now don't break up that trip when Koivu comes back.

It is funny how things go, but the winning teams in the end are the ones that make moves from a position of strength not when all seems lost and they have to do something.

We know that the Wild roster must be altered in order for them to get better. A wild card spot or just missing the playoffs is essentially the same thing come draft day. So let's see the effort made to make this Wild team better for this season and build on the points that they have accumulated to this point.
