Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving has taken care of another bit of housekeeping by signing defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon to a one-year, two-way extension.

Wotherspoon will earn $625,000 if he is in the NHL and $125,000 if he's in Stockton.

The 23-year-old blue liner has appeared in 26 regular season games for the Flames over the last three seasons with 11 of them coming last year. In those 26 games he managed five points while the Flames have controlled 46.1% of the shot attempts with him on the ice at 5 v 5.

Those numbers don't seem overly impressive - they are not - but the Flames controlled 46.4% of the shot attempts without Wotherspoon so it wasn't as if he was anchoring the team in possession. In the games he played the Flames were just as effective with him as they were without him.

Wotherspoon, along with Brett Kulak, figures to have the inside track on one of the final roster spots on the back end this season. Oliver Kylington and Rasmus Andersson, among others, will also compete but the feel is they'll at least start the season in Stockton and get a little more seasoning.

There is no need to rush either player, especially when stop gaps like Wotherspoon are in place and can handle themselves while playing against opposing team's depth players.

With Wotherspoon locked up Treliving and co. can turn their undivided attention to the big restricted free agents: Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan.
