Roberts Retiring, McLaren Trade Nullified

Per Bob McKenzie:

Unclaimed on waivers on trade deadline day, the 42-year-old veteran will not play another game with the Tampa Bay Lightning this season. He had already announced that he would retire at the end of this season.

A formal announcement of Roberts' retirement is expected from the Lightning.

Roberts' contract worked against him being picked up on waivers. His cap hit was more than $2 million and he has a bonus package that pays him $10,000 for each game he plays.

Tough way for it all to end but at the age of 42, Roberts has had an extremely memorable career to look back upon. He was fortunate to be able to play another 11 seasons after retiring in the mid-90s due to injury and has a Cup ring from his early days in Calgary.

I would have liked to see a team take a shot at him on re-entry waivers but there just wasn't much cap space/cash to go around on this deadline day.

Roberts in his prime was able to carry a team on his back for a stretch and will them to win in the playoffs, something he'll certainly be remembered for here in Toronto.

They just don't make those power forwards anymore like they used to...

In other news, Kyle McLaren is a Shark once again. From the press release:

KYLE McLAREN TRADE NULLIFIED BY PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the trade of Kyle McLaren to the Philadelphia Flyers for a sixth round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft has been nullified by the Flyers due to McLaren not passing his physical.

McLaren suffered a hand injury in December while playing for the Worcester Sharks, San Jose’s top development affiliate in the American Hockey League.

“Kyle has been very professional about his situation this season,” said Wilson. “From the beginning of the year, we made a commitment to Kyle to find an opportunity for him to play in the National Hockey League. Unfortunately, this deal didn’t work out but Kyle will return to the organization and work towards the full recovery of his hand.

Enjoy the games tonight,
